Ottawa doesn't need to do that trade and you can't really charge them much for a cap dump because they don't need to dump that player and contract.

A cap dump really only has value to the team if it is detremental to the cap and makes it really difficult to sign players and Murrays contract isn't that for Ottawa. Also consider that he'll probably spend a lot of time on LTIR and Ottawa can just keep the picks.

Rangers have ZERO interest in a 1 year Kane rental and will be very happy to keep Kakko.

I don't think Devils are that far away from contending for a playoff spot. If they can add debrincat while keeping whoever they draft at 2, and have a good free agency, then the '23 pick could prob be late lottery.

at least one of those pieces would have to still be included. 2nd+one of smith/Sarg/Gristyuk/Holtz/Mercer. To a varying degree. Certain assets in that list are worth more than others

Doubtful. Had many years watching Sather trade away picks and young prospects for aging vets trying to buy a CUP and it doesn't work. Renting Kane for 1 year by giving up a 21 year old that is going to be a very good winger for a lot of years is a fools errand IMO. As great a player as Kane is, the Rangers are better off NOT renting him. And no....there is NO WAY they could sign him to an extension.

Meh. This trade seems overwhelmingly greedy on the Rangers end. If they don't win the cup in 2022-23 it will automatically be a failure for us regardless of the extent Kakko develops. I really don't see them making a gamble like this one.
