Detroit gets a free 3rd for a guy on LTIR

Im sorry but in what world does a rebuilding team with no need for the cap space decline a third-rounder for an LTIR-able contract? It's not like the Red Wings are badly in need of the ability to accumulate cap space for a big trade deadline spending spree....

Devils want to be able to accumulate cap space over the course of the season to have room to add players at the deadline. Easily worth it for both sides.

I'm sorry but we already had Bernier. We're not trading for him. Plus there's no guarantee he's staying on LTIR. He could play again. Yzerman will have signed a backup goalie. We're not carrying 3 goalies.

Anaheim won't be trading John Gibson for a package in which the best asset is a 2023 first that might become a 2024 first.

The Ducks are getting a 2023 or 2024 pick, a recent first-rounder, a guy they flip with Shattenkirk and retetnion to get *another* first, AND a goalie who had a rough year but before that was seen as an-up-and-coming potential #1 goalie. All for a guy who was great in 2018-19 but hasn't posted above a .905 in three seasons. I am a big Gibson fan, but what happens if he has another sub-par season? Is his value going to get any higher?

I think this package is more than fair.

You've stated all the reasons I wouldn't want to make this as a Devils fan. I'd rather just have Blackwood and go for one of the many .905 goalies that is likely to be moved, including someone from SJS who will would be cheaper.

Yeah obviously I'm being a bit uncharitable from the Devils' perspective, but I do genuinely think that Gibson would be a star in New Jersey. When you operate from that perspective, it makes it a bit more reasonable.

Goaltending is voodoo, I can't move a distant 1st for a less than sure thing. I've seen what went on with Schneider, I'm gunshy to move a big piece when watching a goalie start to decline. I'd also prefer to go after Campbell or Husso on a deal that prices out most on a 3-4yr deal, but if we end up with Adin Hill or someone like Talbot (if Minn went with Fleury).

I don't get it, they put a guy on LTIR and get a third rounder, end of story. Devils pay a third so they don't have to use LTIR and can accumulate cap space to make additions at the deadline.

Seems like one of the most reasonable trades I have here...

Yzerman has been shown to hold grudges and Bernier rebuffed his offer last year and was traded. Secondly if Bernier was able to come back and play, Wings would either carry three goalies or have to put on waivers. Bernier when here preformed very well, but Yzerman has also shown he will not take cap dumps, unless they help the team on the ice. He took Stall when he needed a LHD, he took Leddy when he needed another LHD and he traded Leddy when he knew he could not resign him and got some size, and 2nd and a prospect that he liked. He has not shown in his 3 years here a desire to take a cap dump for picks. Not being mean just what the history of Yzerman/s tenure as Wings GM.

So you may think Wings fan's are a-holes but we believe in Yzerman and will not take cap dumps just to help another team.

    Well, thanks for clarifying.
I'd wish other Wings fans would follow your lead instead of throwing dickish sentiments around to any other fanbase that dares make an AGM with Detroit involved.
