Not enough for the Veznia contender Markstrom, this team sucks. Not even close to enough for Tanev. Remove 2 mill on Mangiapanes contract.

When Markstrom signed with Calgary, He let be known that he wouldn't play for a rebuilding team. So he's not going to waive his NMC for Buffalo.

He might waive for Buffalo, depending on what happens in Calgary this off-season. Heck looking at the teams the Sabres might be better than Calgary in 2yrs.

I think the Gaudreau signing is a little light. That's 12.9% of cap at signing. Marner was 13.38%, Panarin 14.29%. I'd guess that Gaudreau comes in closer to Panarin's number, as it's all UFA years and he holds the free agent hammer. Somewhere around $11.75m over 8, $94m total.

Also, it'll be an 8 year deal, unless he signs as a FA without the rights being transferred.

All of these are extremely lopsided against the Flames, along with overpays on Gaudreau and Mangiapane

Mangipane looks high, I would have expected the Bryan Rust contract as a comparable ($5.125m x 6)

Gaudreau looks light, I would expect that he would be looking at Panarin as a comparable (14.29% of cap when signed.) I think he ends up at $11.75m over 8, 94m.

The Rust contract will probably help, I was expecting the Teravainen/Bjorkstrand deal for him.

Gaudreau will get 8 years from Calgary, and is signing during a flat cap. Both will bring down the AAV by a fair margin compared to Panarin who signed with the highest bidder on the open market before a flat cap. Panarin got 81.5M, There is no chance Gaudreau gets more than that from Calgary. i would expect between 76M and 80M (the same or less than what Barkov extended for)

I don't think Barkov's contract is a great comparable, as it included RFA years (he's only 26.)

Gaudreau's next contract is all UFA years, and likely his last chance to make money. In my opinion, he took his discount on his last contract, and given that he's can be a free agent mid-July, I'd expect that he listens to all offers.

Players like him write their own tickets. I wouldn't be shocked to see him get what I posted, and honestly, if he signs that now, it's a win for Calgary.

Barkov's contract did not include UFA years, he was going to be a UFA this summer without that extension since he's over the 7 pro years limit already.

I think you are confusing the difference between actual money and cap hit. Cap hit's do not matter to players, what they care about is actual money, term, clauses, and signing bonuses. GM's care about cap hits though. The 8th year is a big bargaining chip for both player and team. It gives Johnny more guaranteed job security and it helps lower the AAV of an expensive contract. Look at Landeskog from last summer for example, he was reportedly looking for a 9Mx7y deal on the market but signed for 7Mx8y with Colorado.

Sorry, Barkov signed the extension Oct 8, 2021, which was during his RFA, and like many other players, signed well before hitting free agency.

Honest question (seriously, I don't know) - why hasn't the deal been done yet? Couldn't they have done a deal this season?

Actually Barkov's last season of possible RFA status was 19/20. He played his 3 ELC years then signed a 6 year deal. Refer to the Pastrnak or Marner contract (just at half the price) for a comparable deals term wise. As an RFA it is impossible to have a NTC/NMC so those kicked in once he was no longer eligible to be a RFA.

I can't say for certain as I am not Treliving nor Gaudreau's agent but I can speculate it was because after Johnny's and the teams results last year neither was certain where the team would be this year so they wanted to hold off on that to see where the team stood once the season got going. But new contracts are often a distraction and there is some truth to the idea of a player relaxing more after a deal is inked (Doughty and Karlsson come to mind). Either way both parties likely just wanted to focus on the task at hand, which was succeeding this year. They also both made a point at the beginning of the seasons that they would not be answering media questions about his contract until the season was over. IMO this furthers my opinion that they just wanted to focus on the season and then take it from there.

I am quite confident that he will re-sign though as I really don't see much of a fit elsewhere and Calgary's current roster is really close knit.

This may be a hot take but I think loosing Monahan right after the TDL really hurt the Flames chances. It was just too late to take advantage of the newly available cap space and too early for him in the playoffs where he has always been fairly clutch. Jarnkrok did a decent job centering the 3rd line but 8 points in 29 games with the team is just not good enough to be a top 9 center when Backlund is forced to play almost purely in a shutdown role

I think we're talking about potential RFA years vs. contract signed years, which are different, but the net change is relatively moot. I honestly don't think it matters in the Gaudreau negotiation, as Lewis Gross is going to get what he thinks is market for the player.

Agree about losing Monahan. His injury was likely as impactful as Tanev's (and maybe Z's, from what I've read today.) Hopefully (for the player) he's healthy and good to go going forward, injuries suck.

If you were Gaudreau's agent now, why wouldn't you wait until free agency to see what the market could be?

Im not saying he won't look at the market at all I just think it's important to remember Johnny chooses where he goes not his agent and if he wants to go to a rebuilding team like Philly to get paid like 1-2M more over the next 8 years that's his decision. I just don't see that as something likely.

Last year I called it a 50/50 between re-upping with the Flames and leaving for hometown but I also thought Philly was going to make the playoffs this season instead of faceplant

Honestly, hope he re-ups with the Flames. He's an underrated player who came in tied for 2nd in scoring in the NHL with 40 goals and 115 points this season.

I said earlier that I think he took his discount contract with Calgary already, and honestly, I'd pay the man now. He's worth the money, IMO.

Yep, but you're talking about the guy who was tied for 2nd in the NHL for points, after years of being an (arguably) underpaid star, who is apparently going to the free market.

I honestly figure that the Marner deal (13.38% of cap) would be a good deal, but we're talking about the guy tied for 2nd in points in a year he becomes UFA. It's not the Panarin deal, which may be closer.

I thought that the Flames would resign him, but the more I look at it, the more I question it. You're talking 76-80, matching the Panarin deal is 94, and I think the market for a UFA Gaudreau is higher than that.

Will be an interesting negotiation, to say the least.

I would do it if I am Buffalo, but I would change only RHD on the roster for something else.
