mike hoffman: 3x$4.5M from Montreal last summer - same age, very similar production (17-19-36 in 52 GP vs. 16-22-38 in 56 GP for Smith)
tomas tatar: 2x$4.5M from NJD last summer - a year younger, worse production (10-20-30 in 50 GP in 2020-21).
kyle palmieri: 4x$5M from NYI - a year younger, coming off a bad regular season (10-11-21 in 51 GP but 7-2-9 in 19 playoff games rebuilding his value.)
so yeah $4M might not be the *most* team-friendly deal but it definitely comes off as the low end of what he'd get in UFA.
