The issue with the trade is that Arizona can sign FAs on one year deals to get the equivalent of a late 1st and they aren't getting a guy that costs little in real dollars + high cap hit for reaching the floor getting a (and seem to like their goalie too). They are going to want to tank this season especially too, so trading for Mrazek to flip him after a rebound (his buy out is cheap for them) isn't worth it

First off, thanks for the feedback. Second, it kind of surprises me how much you guys are valuing Vejmelka; I don't think he's necessarily bad, but his numbers this year were sub-par in both traditional SV% and GSAX, which accounts for shot quality. He seems like more of a 1B type long term than a starter, which is basically what Mrazek was before his poor performance this season.
The other thing is that Arizona is pretty obviously tanking next season and although having at least somewhat competent goaltending would help make them look respectable, it's also counterproductive in terms of helping their lottery position. IMO another 1st round pick this year would do wonders for their prospect pool and personally I don't mind this cost at all from their perspective.

Vejmelka ranked 2nd in the league for all goalies (with at least 15 games played) for HD shots against/60. He ranked 25th in HDSV%, for comparison Mrazek ranked 64th out of 65 for HDSV%. Vejmelka was also a rookie this year and only 25. His SV% had way more to do with the quality of team and not him. If you watched him play this year you would know he was excellent at times but a bit streaky. That is something that can be fixed as he starts playing more

They are honestly probably tanking for the next 4 years and Vej happily extended their, he probably saw it as an opportunity to keep a starter job, and if has a. 900 on a terrible team in those coming years, ge will likely get the benefit of the doubt as long as he shows flashes of brilliance. I don't think he's all that valuable but I don't think that trade makes sense fkr either team. I wouldn't be surprised if they move schmaltz this year if they manage to move chychrun

I did see that his contract is back loaded which obviously lessens the fit for a cash strapped team. Agree with the point about it being a good environment for a bounce back year.
I think the main concern here obviously is giving up Vejmelka, who they obviously value higher than me . I think if Mrazek put up similar numbers to for instance, Scott Wedgewood this year it wouldn't hurt the tank too much, and obviously if he stinks it actively helps it.

The point about signing rental free agents is true, but this doesn't diminish their ability to do that, and those players would have to play well enough that they'd be helping the Yotes win games; which obviously conflicts with the goal of tanking. I think taking on cap dumps, especially ones that double as reclamation projects, is the best way to go for them. But that's just my take.

Just curious, where are you getting your data from? I'm seeing 54/65 in HDSV% via MoneyPuck (with Mrazek at 61st). I'm not seeing any HD shots against column so I'm guessing you have a different source.

Let's say he does good enough for a team to want to add him, he isn't going to bring in much, plus then they we need a new goalie who is willing to play in front of 5k fans and endure the rebuild. It's much easier and efficient for them to use the space and effort to acquire rentals in the forward and defense positions that won't have too much of an impact on their tanking plan but can't get points or provide some sort of depth elsewhere. So while there is no risk in acquiring him for free for example, there isn't much upside in getting him while moving out their goalie who is locked for cheap. If they move Wedgewood elsewhere they might take him for free.

Edit: they don't got Wedgewood anymore. They have the Finnish goalie from the Olympics that the Leafs signrd and waived before the deadline, he might be a better trade candidate for Mrazek and a small sweetener
