If Bergevin Were Still In Charge

Description
I don't think there is a single person out there that still believes Bergevin was a good GM. That being said, I wanted to play around with what this team would look like going into 2022-23 because he probably would have doubled down and made things even worse.

The concept:

I am going to roll back the 3 big trades that Hughes made... because Bergevin never believed in trading top 6 forwards or top 4 defensemen.
I am going to assume that Bergevin would be too arrogant to admit the team's underperformance was not an isolated incident. He would plan to make the playoffs next season.
I am going to make the offseason trades that I honestly believe he would make this offseason to further his goal of making the playoffs next season and his agenda of his preferred type of players.
I am going to resign players I believe he would have resigned.
I am going to assume that player performances that came through after the coaching change remained constant. So Caufield/Suzuki/Romanov/Petry all gained value in the second half of the year.
I am trading Harris to Boston for nothing as ZERO chance he signed with Bergevin.
I am not signing Rem Pitlick, because he would not have picked him up on waivers.

Are we having fun yet?!

Ok you hate Bergevin, but outside the 2017 offseason and 2021 offseason, he did a good job…
Chiarot Lehkonen Toffoli would have stayed, sure
But Dvorak wouldn’t have been traded
That defense is horrible, he would never have went with that

what makes a good GM is the question. i dont think bergevin was great but i cant say he was bad. he made more good trafes than bad ones for sure. made some good ufa signing that paid off well most of the time. but was very bad at drafting. and thencin his last year gave so.many bad contract that it handcuffed this team for the futures. i believe he was an avergage GM but the moves he made in the last year were all pretty much just bad.

I don't hate Bergevin, but I DO disagree with your premise that he did a good job. He made a few great trades and a few really bad ones. Ultimately he was terrible at evaluating amateur and pro talent and how it relates to the changing state of the game.

These are his 1st round draft picks in all his seasons as GM:

        Galchenyuk - Disaster Draft #1
McCarron - Failed Development Project #1
Scherbak - Failed Development Project #2
Juulsen - Injuries derailed what could have been a decent career
Sergachev - Great Draft #1 - Traded for Drouin (Disaster Trade #1)
Poehling - Jury's still out, but very close to Failed Development Project #3
        Kotkaniemi - Disaster Draft #2
        Caufield - Great draft #2
        Guhle - Great draft #3
        Mailloux - Disaster Draft #3

        Price contract
        Gallagher contract
        Hoffman contract
        Armia contract
        Drouin trade/contract

I don't hate the person. But I think he was a bad GM, yeah.

He has nothing to do with Galchenyuk, he wanted Teravainen but he just became the GM and the scouts were all saying Galchenyuk. All the draft pick aren’t on him. You can’t juge Mailloux, he’s been really good for London this year. Drouin vs Sergachev, Alzner in, Markov out, Radulov out, all the 2017 offseason. Disaster. Price contrat is fine, he earned it and he is still a good goaltender (not 3 of the last 5 start tho). He had no choice, we didn’t have a Demko coming in like Vancouver. Gallagher contract, disaster right from the start
        Armia, disaster
        Byron 2nd contract, disaster
        Hoffman, bad signing
Letting Kotkaniemi go, that’s all 2021 offseason
Not signing Danault was a good move tho, but not giving KK the 2 years 2.8M he was asking is dump. After our run, he should have start a rebuilt with down the middle Suzuki Kotkaniemi Evans Poehling

When you are the boss... Everything that happens is on you.

If he would have fired Timmins day 1 & traded Price & Gallagher in their contract years and signed Danault... Imagine where we would be?

We wouldn’t have went to the SCF if we would have traded Price and Gallagher on his contract year

That's subjective. Many teams that win the cup win with a 5-7M/year goalie.

We could have signed a different Goalie as a UFA and used the trade return for Price... Which would have been enormous, to better all other positions.

Gallagher was not a factor in the playoff run, but I still believe we would have gotten a 1st and a prospect for him at that time. Price would have yielded 2 x 1st a top prospect and a roster player.

Who knows where we would be today...

The best offer MTL ever received for Carey Price @ 6.5M was the Blues with Robert Thomas + Jake Allen (wasn’t good then) + 2nd RD pick … Bergevin wanted Robert Thomas + Carter Hutton + 1st Rd pick. So Price didn’t have that much value (we didn’t know back then Thomas would be this good tho)
