I'd have an incredibly hard time imagining the devils dumping a 23 year old kid who finally appears to be turning a corner just to get out under a contract that's only on the book for one more season when they're in basically the opposite of cap trouble. Just makes no sense.

Yeah i'm sure Dallas is just anticipating on a 37 year old Burns making $6,500,000 x 3 years. Nill would probably want Petry instead if he's willing to waive.

Won't disagree that Burns might not be a great idea for Dallas, but on basically the same contract, I can't imagine someone wanting Petry who plays 22 mins a night with 16 points compared to Burns who plays 26 mins a night with 50 points.

Yeah Petry is having a bad season this year no one denies it, But his 4 previous years he put up 40+ points. So yeah he's not Burns but he's not that bad either and 3 years younger.

that's true. maybe this is just an anomaly season for Petry but I would worry about him bouncing back. Granted, you're right - he's 3 years younger which is good.

If taking back Donskoi and giving up 2 thirds is the price to move labanc, no way in hell would I do that. As “bad” as labanc was he has 1 more goal than Donskoi in about 50 fewer games. They both have scored at a .28 ppg pace this season, with Donskoi playing in 69 games compared to labanc getting 4th line minutes in 21 games.

I dont even think they will have an issue keeping Tatar & Johnsson around. They are still very young at Wing. Having two veterans around for another year isn't a terrible thing.

Outside of Holtz, is there any other sure fire prospect on the way for next camp to take the minutes? Wood & Kuokkanen ... Clarke had a sub par year ... Zetterlund ... a few maybe, but nothing concrete. Keep the vets (& Boqvist), push for playoffs

This old-man Burns narrative really needs to be contextualized though. The man is playing (and has played for years) an insane amount of minutes per game every night consistently without missing a single game, and we're entertaining the idea that there's an imminent decline just because he's turning 37? Additionally, we all know he's a physical beast of a human being in exceptionally fantastic shape. Reduce his minutes and you'll get not only the same production next year as he did this year, but I'd argue a fresher Burns puts up even more production next year. He's showed no signs of "old-man" syndrome. I agree that it's rare for players to keep similar production in their late 30s, but I'd also argue that Burns is one of those rare players.

oh i totally agree. burns will still be an NHL caliber player at 40 no doubt (at least imo). I don't think he'll improve any more than how he's playing now, but he could perform at a 55 point pace for the next few years. In all likelihood, he'll be around a 35-45 point guy who plays 2nd pair minutes by the end of this contract but frankly that's really solid when you consider how much other guys drop off in their late 30's. Burns is a machine of a human.

PHI's going to look for a cheap vet to backup Carter (Maybe Jones for cheap)
