It would have to be a blow away offer for the hawks to take it, and I think half the league would be interested (and willing) to match that package.

I’d assume this would only happen if he wanted out and then in that case the player can be picky about where he wants to go, which should knock out over half the league in theory

I’ve never seen an ACGM where the Pens lines and D pairings have looked so bad.

And Letang 8.5M per..lol..?? Do u read anything Pens?? Any articles about Letang’s-Geno-Rust extensions?? Where NHl insiders/NHL beat writers, Pens Insiders/Pens beat writers quote Letang’s agent and Hextall/Burke.??

Marcus Pettersson is worth a 3rd round pick, Not a 3rd and 4th round pick.

He can't be picky, he has no say in where he would theoretically get traded since there is no NMC or NTC in his contract. Thus, every team would be in on him and this offer would be non-competitive.

I've been trying to keep up with what the numbers would be for both Letang and Malkin, but didn't know there were direct quotes from their agents regarding the asking price.

What's the number??

These suggestions don't seem THAT clueless.

Not a bad start with 2 first round picks which will definitely have to be part of a package, but we would need some A level prospects that I think other teams have better ones to acquire

Because they aren’t and that person is the clueless one. All we know is Malkin has stated he would accept a pay cut but how much of a cut is completely up in the air. Letang’s position has been that he’s been underpaid so the idea of him not signing for at least 8 million aav is beyond dumb. Rust will sign a long term deal. He’s almost 29 and he will be signing the most important contract of his career, whether that’s with us or elsewhere.

That’s fair enough. I do think John Marino and Teddy offer a rebuilding team a lot as both are still fairly young but neither has even realized their full potential yet. Kapanen is a frustrating player but at least he’s still fairly young. I wouldn’t want to include someone like Zucker in a deal like this one. We don’t have the prospects to match others, which is why the firsts and the young roster players have to be a big part of any deal we would make.

I understand he doesn’t have a movement clause. I think the pure basics of how the league works would knock half the team out, why would another rebuilding team unload picks and prospects for him? About a 1/3 of the league is rebuilding. Another 1/3 are in contention model and what’s left is in the no-man’s land of mediocrity.

Because he's 24 years old, on a friendly contract for another year and a RFA after that. That's someone you rebuild around, not trade which is another reason his price will be sky high. I bet 28 teams in the league would bid on him whether they are contending, wanting to contend, or rebuilding....rarely if ever do you get that young of, RFA top 5 goal scorer in the league hit the market and teams won't just ignore that...again why the Blackhawks would be dumb to move him unless a massive overpay.

As others have said, it will take (2) firsts plus a grade A prospect and don't think the Pens can make that up with quantity over quality because they are missing a grade A prospect from their farm system.

This is 2 firsts, a 1st round prospect, a 24 yr old top 4 dman, a solid yound 3rd line centre, and a fast top 9 forward which is worth minimum 5 first rounders package. For a guy who would be Pittsburghs 5th best forward?

The hawks top 4 RD is set for the next 5 years, this puts Murphy on the third pair even though the hawks have a plethora of D prospects trying to make the team. Hawks have Dach Strome Toews down the middle. I'm interested to see your ranking of the top 5 Penguins forwards with DeBrincat included.

This package doesn't get it done.

Here u go. Google my man..!!

Geno has said 100 different interviews. He wants to sign 2-3 more years and then go and play and retire in Russia. Said he’s willing to take a hometown and he’s not worried about money, he’s a very rich man.

Sid has said 100 different interviews. That he took a hometown discount and for it to work, everyone has to take alittle less. He says it in his spitting chicklet’s interview even; when they ask about Geno extension.

Geno-"I'm not thinking about my contract right now," Malkin said Dec. 29. "I'm not thinking about money. I'm a pretty rich guy. ... This is my point, I have had a tough half of the year. I want to be back at my level of my game.

https://www.nhl.com/news/kris-letang-evgeni-malkin-and-bryan-rust-contracts-a-top-priority-says-penguins-gm-ron-hextall/c-330246758

Letang has said “he thinks he can play forever”. He wants 5 yrs at 7M per according to “his representation”. Hextall/Burke don’t want to go 5 years. They want 2-3 year extension. They are far apart on the term. Not the AVV.

“Seravalli reports that there are “big gaps” between the team and the player, with the major sticking point being the term on Letang’s next contract. According to Seravalli’s sources, Letang’s representation is seeking a five-year deal with an average annual value beginning at $7M, and the Penguins are “simply not willing” to even consider Letang on an extension that takes him to the point where he is nearing 40 years old. Letang is currently 34 and will be 35 by the time next season starts, meaning any extension for him carries a significant risk of becoming an albatross, despite how good he still is at the NHL level. For a Penguins team that is navigating which direction to go as a franchise long-term, it is understandable for their relatively new management team of Brian Burke and Ron Hextall to be wary of signing Letang to such a massive extension.”

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nhl/report-kris-letang-penguins-have-big-gaps-in-negotiations-for-next-contract/ar-AAUTWJp

Letang-I’d say they settle 4 years @ 7.5M per. That’s pretty far from your 8.5M AVV and “his representation” saying they want 5 years @7M per.

Geno-will sign 2-3 season and then go and retire in Russia; like he’s always said. I’d say @ 7M-8M per. Probably 3 years @7.75m. Sid is signed for 8.7M.

Rust-will sign a 5-6 year deal @ 6M-6.5M per(30M-39M) deal. I’d say 6 years @6.25M(37.5M total contract, a huge NHL deal). Guentzel is signed a 6M per. Hyman signed 7 years @ 5.5Mper(38.5M total).

Thanks for all that context; I think the biggest sticking point for forecasting what will occur with Letang is based on total dollars.

If he wants 5 x7 [35M] and Pitt wants to offer a max of 3 years, I believe that would drive the cap hit up dramatically. That would come out to 3 x 11.66M. Obviously that's a ridiculous figure and the the nature of a negotiation.

I hope they land on a healthy middle ground, but if the term were 3 years, that 8.5M figure seems pretty reasonable right? He'd be taking 10 million less to sign that deal, which also seems pretty absurd.
