If Tampa spent 1 first round pick instead of 2 on Brandon Hagel

IMO, the trade would be a lot more fair.
    CHI
JT Miller was traded to Vancouver for one first round pick.

Why should Brandon Hagel be worth at least two??

For those wondering about the exact conditions on the first round picks in a nutshell, they are as follows:
        CHI
If the 2023 1st round pick is in the Top 10 ...

          Tampa would keep it ...

and Chicago would receive Tampa's 2025 1st round pick instead.

If both the 2023 and 2024 first round picks are in the Top 10 ...

Tampa would keep them both ...

And Chicago would receive Tampa's 2025 and 2026 1st round picks instead.

But what if the 2023 1st round pick is not in the Top 10 ...

But the 2024 1st round pick is?
            CHI
Based on what it says on NHL.com ...

I'm inclined to believe that the Tampa's 1st round pick for 2024 ...

would belong to Chicago in that case.

Tampa can do two 1st's because they're all-in right now. They've got a chance to three-peat.

By the time those picks turn in to NHLers, there's a good chance that Brisebois may not be the GM. That 6 or 7 years down the road that those picks would be full-time players.

JT Miller is a free agent and they're not going to have the money to resign him. Hagel has two more years at a 1.5mm cap hit. Steal.

What about the Blake Coleman situation?

Blake Coleman had two years at 1.8 million.

Tampa spends 1 first round pick + Nolan Foote.

              I thought Tampa got fleeced.

Brandon Hagel has three years at 1.5 million before his last year as an RFA.

Tampa spends 2 first round picks + gives up Raddysh and Katchouk for 2 fourth round picks.

              I thought Tampa got fleeced.

Why should the difference between Coleman and Hagel be a first round pick, roughly??

Why can't they just not get fleeced whenever they need to make a big trade??

It seems for every year that goes by, Tampa needs to spend more for less.

Foote was probably considered late 1st rd value at the time...IMO the trade breaks down in 2 Hagel for 2 1sts and Raddysh + Katchouk for 2 4ths + Necessary Cap Space

I thought Coleman was an overpay. I was wrong. Thought Goodrow + 3rd for a 1st was an overpay. I was wrong. They were essential AND available for 2 Cup runs. Brilliant acquisitions because they won.

Savard for a 1st, 3rd and a 4th. Thought that was a lot but it helped secure the second Cup. Brilliant acquisition because they won.

A lot for Hagel but his cap hit for this year and the next two plus how good a player he has become keeps Tampa at the forefront for the next three years. That's brilliant. Raddysh and Katchouk so they can afford Hagel's cap hit. Outstanding. They get 2 4ths as well. Underrated and so smart.

It's not spending more for less. It's definitely not getting fleeced. It's spending what you have to to continue to be a Stanley Cup favorite for this year and quite possibly two more years after this. Hats off to Brisebois.

Miller isn't the best comparison though, the Blake Coleman trade is a much better comparison. He was traded for a 1st and Nolan Foote (A 1st rounder from the previous year).
The way I see it Hagel was always going to cost more than Coleman did for these reasons:
Hagel has a lower cap hit (1.5 vs 1.8)
Hagel is much younger (23 at the time of trade vs 27)
Hagel was having a slightly better season than Coleman
Hagel has 3 years left at his cheap deal (2 for Coleman)
Hagel is an RFA at the end of the deal (Coleman was a UFA) Obviously the most important factor here

I think Tampa probably got better value in the Hagel trade than they did the Coleman trade if I'm being honest
