Jensen is the Caps best GAR player on a great contract. No way they move him, especially for that. They'd consider it for a 1st or like two 2nds.

They’d be crazy not to
Asplund is comparable to Compher, but a couple mil cheaper

32 year old D don't garner that kind of trade value. Also the caps are going to have to move a few players to get younger and save cap space. They will look to move guys like Jensen and Lars Eller to get picks and prospects to get rejuvenate the team and rebuiild the pipeline. Wheeler in the Athletic had Washington as the 26th best prospect pipeline this season. Outside of McMichael, who is already in Wash, their only near ready prospect is Lapierre. Nate Schmidt, who is younger, a better player and has 4 more years on his deal went for only a 3RD last off-season.

Thanks. My goal was to let the kids plays, add some veterans from winning organizations and get to the cap floor without really blocking any of our prospects. Varlomov still has tread on the tire and could be the workhorse if UPL proves he isn't ready and his $5 mill in cap goes along way to getting us to the cap floor. Jensen as a steady veteran D and Compher adds a utility forward who can nearly anywhere.

While Compher and Asplund are similar-ish players, JT is a better goal scorer and honestly we need his bigger cap hit to get to the floor.

I also brought back Vinnie because he seems to fit what Granato wants to do and both he and JT can play up and down the lineup when the inevitable injuries strike. Neither will block Peterka when he's ready to be in the NHL full time.

Yeah….
At first, i didn’t want Hinostroza back
But he has played decently for us, & i do think he can play an effective role in the bottom6
Like u allude to, that doesn’t mean Peterka will likely start in the AHL. But injuries will happen, & he’ll get plenty of call up time here. If he plays well enough, we won’t be able to take him out of the lineup- and I’m ok with that “problem”

Compher is a similar utility type player who works in the bottom6 as well imo

Whether it’s Varlamov, Holtby, Francouz, etc etc….
Any reliable Vet who can mentor UPL & the other kids makes a lot of sense

Jensen & bringing back Pysyk help steady the right side of the defense- might not be ideal, but they’re “ok”
It’ll be interesting to see if we choose Nemec or Jiricek with our top10 pick- OR- if we go with a forward there & take RH defensemen with our later picks in the 1st
If we go forward with the 1st pick, there still is some good talent that’ll be available to us later on. Guys like Seamus Casey, Ty Nelson, Tristan Luneau, Ryan Chesley, Elias Salomonsson & Maveric Lamoureux are all RH defensemen that should get picked in the top40. So there’s talent there to be excited about. Also, Lian Bishel is LH, but a big & physical guy who interests me as well.
It would be nice to hit a HR & grab a good UFA defenseman to help us out, but it’s probably more likely that we are drafting & developing long term partners for our LH studs

Yeah… that’s a terrible return for Jensen lol. Capitals need RSD and Schultz contract (4m) is gone next year and we don’t have any NHL ready d. Jensen absolutely would cost you 2nd +. I bet capitals extend him. He’s only making 2.5m how do they get a player of his talent for less? Lol if they move contracts it won’t be a guy making way less than he’s worth. Yikes 4th and 6th? That’s insulting lol

Protas AJF Alexeyev? Snively? Protas. They have a bunch of rookies that have done well and played this year. Pilon? The athletic is a clown show.m and the difference between #26 and # 15 is very narrow. Capitals were rated 30th the year before and we didnt eve. Have a 1st round pick this year explain that?

100% agree they might need to move 1 or 2 guys but 1 of them won't be Jensen. They'll drop like Hagelin and Eller. They won't most a top 3D on a great contract for nothing.

I get that he still a good player, but at some point the Caps have to get younger. This is one of the oldest teams in the NHL. The top 6 D are all currently 30 and older. The top 9 scorers on this team, except Wilson (who will be 28 next season) will all be 30+ next season. This aging team is in the second wild card positon but they aren't nearly as competitive as the top teams in the East. To get back to the top something has to change this off-season. Some of the these vets have to be moved out to make room for Lapierre, McMichael, Spivey, and others. Jensen and Eller have no trade protection which makes them logical players to be moved. I understand why you think Jensen is worth a 2nd+, but that isn't what trade history has shown. If the Caps GM can get it, great for him, but don't count on it.

Wilson Mantha Kuzy (29) 1/2 the top 6 isn’t 30 or older lol. Ovechkin is one of the top scorers in the NHL and Oshie will likely move to the bottom 6 next year.

1) likely player out / actual players out next year
Schultz (31)
Kempny (31)
Eller (32)
Hagelin (33)

Replacing them / coming up
Alexeyev (22)
Lapierre (20)
Axel Jonsson-Fjällby (24)
Protas (21)

All these guys will likely be on the roster next year and will drastically drop the average age.

Trading Jensen bc he’s “older” isnt smart. When his contract is up Iorio will likely be ready to replace him. Passing the torch is how it’s done not trading effective players for awful returns while they are playing their best hockey paired with our best defenseman (overall)

MF isn’t 30? Isn’t a rookie? Top pairing guy?
