Status Quo - how much under the cap
No question. A friend on Sabrespace asked me to illustrate a status quo Sabres team to see how far they’d be under the gap. This group is about 16.5 million under the cap. Honestly we need to re-sign Olofsson and upgrade the Okposo line’s center, find a veteran stay at home RHD (better then Pysyk) and a legit veteran goaltender. Even with these changes we may still be under the cap. Expect a dead contract acquisition, like Boychuk, as well.

I agree with that wholeheartedly.
As to Dumba and Varlamov, I don't know if they will ultimately be available, although I suspect Varlamov is already despite Lou's comments to the contrary. However, both teams need cap space. Minn because of the Suter/Parise buyouts and NYI to fix the D on their underperforming team. Sorry Minn fans, but there will be a couple painful departures to stay cap compliant with Fiala to re-sign.

The Sabres don’t want or need Tyson Barrie. They certainly aren’t going to give two picks to take on that cap hit.

Offseason attempt
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Skyraider112</b></div><div>If you watch UPL play, you can clearly see he is a better goalie than his save percentage shows. Rochester has not been a good defensive team in any of the years he has played there. He is facing a high-volume of shots and many of them are high-danger. He has been very solid in the NHL with the limited showing he has had. To trade a goalie prospect for a mid-20s goalie who struggles to have .900 save percentage in the NHL just does not make sense. UPL should not be our starter next season, I agree with you there. Getting a vet goalie on a 2 year contract would be ideal. Portillo should be promoted to AHL next season and Levi should remain in the NCAA, do not rush such a promising prospect</div></div>
Then how do you explain Tokar, Houser and Dell outperforming him behind the same defense? UPL simply isn't NHL ready. Levi will be signed as soon as Northeastern's season ends. He is our top goaltending prospect and after he wins the Hobey Baker, he'll have nothing left to prove in the NCAA. I think it's more likely that Portillo returns to college, but even that is doubtfuil with Hughes, Power, Johnson, Brisson and Beniers all moving on. If Levi and Portillo are signed and slated as the starters in the AHL and ECHL and UPL isn't good enough for the NHL, where do you play UPL. The answer is you don't. You trade him for other assets.

Offseason attempt
For all you UPL fans, do you realize he has never posted a save % over 900 in 3 AHL seasons? That's a goaltender not yet ready for the NHL and to force him into the NHL next season despite not flourishing in the AHL is a mistake. I also believe the Sabres need to clear minor league spots for two goaltenders who will likely be better than UPL long-term in Levi and Portillo and should be signed this off-season. (Ullmark topped out at 922 in the AHL before being promoted and was over 900 all 3 of his AHL seasons.)
Instead, the Sabres need two solid experienced NHL goaltenders next season to help get this team into playoff contention. Samsonov has been outplayed by Vanacek and I doubt Washington will pay to keep both RFAs. However, at 25 Samsonov still has upside potential but would benefit from playing behind a veteran like Varlamov. This deal likely saves about $7-8 mill in cap for Washington, while adding some much need youth to their pipeline. The Sabres get veterans to help mentor a young team and cap hits to get them to the cap floor. Girgensons is there just to replace the forward depth lost by trading Ellers.
I readily admit that Jensen is a sticking point, but I believe the Caps might part with the 32 year old D in the right deal.

Maybe after the first 16 games when he had 15 pts and 5 goals, Olofsson would have garnered much more than this, but in his last 22 he has 6 pts and 4 goals (two were empty netters).
I completely agree, Pierre-Olivier Joseph nor Zach Aston-Reese, fit into Buffalo's future, (their names are WAY TOO long), but Joseph has a decent ceiling and the second is a nice pick.
If Olofsson was traded, this would be a good return.</div></div>

A good return for VO would be a late 1st or 2 2nds or a pick and near ready prospect in an area of need. Nothing in the proposed trade fits that description. Sorry. People seem to be discounting that VO was recovering from an injury that affected his shooting over his last 20 games. That now seems to be in the rearview mirror. Anthony Mantha, a pretty good comparable to VO, brought a 1st, a 2nd and 2 players including the Vrana (an RFA) who blossomed in Det after the trade and we re-signed to a 3-year extension.
I'm not saying VO will bring in that kind of return, but it will be better than this offer.

I'm not so sure. It's a chance to start again in the NHL. While the team is a bottom feeder this season, there is too much young talent for this team to stay that way for much longer.
That said, I'm not enamored with the trade. VO is likely to be re-signed by the Sabres and he is worth more than a cap dump in Varlamov and a failing prospect in Bellows. I can see the Sabres being willing to take both Bellows and Varlamov, but not for a top 6 forward. Something more like Casey Firtzgerald or Rasmus Asplund and a pick for both.

Let me have it
As a Sabres fan, I don't hate the Mrazek deal. He is having a tough year in Toronto, but after watching the Sabres 5-1 manhandling of the Leafs, I can understand why a goalie might struggle behind that defense. He is young enough that if he returns to forum, he'll be a nice piece for the next few years.

I would take Eller and pay a 4th or 5th for him, but I would not trade Fitz for him</div></div>
Fitz is really a JAG. He at best is a cheap depth D-man, but he’s easily upgraded by what this team truly needs is a good Veteran RHD to mentor the kids like Samuelsson and Power while providing on ice and off ice leadership. Think Teppo Numminen back in the day. That’s where Cole and Ruuta come in. If we get those kind of players, moving Fitz to help fill another need should be considered.

The Trouba deal is interesting from a Sabres standpoint. Unfortunately, Trouba owns a complete NMC for another 2 years. It's unlikely he'll accept the trade. I also doubt the Rags would have to pay the Sabres (or any team with cap space) to take him with the 2nd rd pick. He is still a good player and teams would probably pay the Rags to get him, especially if a retention could be worked out.

I made a mistake, The better draft pick was supposed to be coming to Buffalo for taking the cap dump and giving up a player with control. The picks are now correct in a 3rd in 2022 to Buffalo for Buffalo's 5th in 2023

I get that he still a good player, but at some point the Caps have to get younger. This is one of the oldest teams in the NHL. The top 6 D are all currently 30 and older. The top 9 scorers on this team, except Wilson (who will be 28 next season) will all be 30+ next season. This aging team is in the second wild card positon but they aren't nearly as competitive as the top teams in the East. To get back to the top something has to change this off-season. Some of the these vets have to be moved out to make room for Lapierre, McMichael, Spivey, and others. Jensen and Eller have no trade protection which makes them logical players to be moved. I understand why you think Jensen is worth a 2nd+, but that isn't what trade history has shown. If the Caps GM can get it, great for him, but don't count on it.

I'm not sure why Buffalo would be part of that 3 way trade. The way it looks is the Sabres trade Mitts for a 2nd and a bunch of players we don't need. Kassian does add toughness when healthy which isn't often and Barrie is an unnecessary player when you already have Dahlin and Power.

Thanks. My goal was to let the kids plays, add some veterans from winning organizations and get to the cap floor without really blocking any of our prospects. Varlomov still has tread on the tire and could be the workhorse if UPL proves he isn't ready and his $5 mill in cap goes along way to getting us to the cap floor. Jensen as a steady veteran D and Compher adds a utility forward who can nearly anywhere.
While Compher and Asplund are similar-ish players, JT is a better goal scorer and honestly we need his bigger cap hit to get to the floor.
I also brought back Vinnie because he seems to fit what Granato wants to do and both he and JT can play up and down the lineup when the inevitable injuries strike. Neither will block Peterka when he's ready to be in the NHL full time.

32 year old D don't garner that kind of trade value. Also the caps are going to have to move a few players to get younger and save cap space. They will look to move guys like Jensen and Lars Eller to get picks and prospects to get rejuvenate the team and rebuiild the pipeline. Wheeler in the Athletic had Washington as the 26th best prospect pipeline this season. Outside of McMichael, who is already in Wash, their only near ready prospect is Lapierre. Nate Schmidt, who is younger, a better player and has 4 more years on his deal went for only a 3RD last off-season.
