I think you're underselling the returns a bit here.
Edmonton gets a starting goalie & Cal at 50% retention, and the Islanders only get two 2nds for taking back Mike Smith and Kyle Turris? Turris is basically dead weight on their roster (22 games, 8:48 TOI, $1.65M cap hit), and getting rid of Mike Smith lets them roll out Varlamov and Stuart Skinner next year without having to worry about Skinner passing through waivers. I personally think you can get a better return just splitting Varlamov & Clutterbuck into two separate deals.
I also think the Mayfield deal is a little light - Boston doesn't capital-n Need help on RD with McAvoy & Carlo in the lineup, so they probably wouldn't want to pay up, and getting back a disgruntled DeBrusk and a 2nd while also giving up a 4th feels like they lose the deal. JDB might turn it around, but I don't think getting another middle-6 guy making a decent sized cap hit makes the Isles a necessarily better team.
I do like what you're doing in general though - using that cap space the Isles created earlier this season to leverage against contenders needing to maneuver around the cap. I just think you can get more bang for your buck doing it.
