Description
I watch every single Oilers game. If they keep playing the way they are, I think there's a case to be made about continuity and not adding any. This team plays 11F/7D now so it's easier for the younger defencemen.

The only real hole I could see is LHD - and we'd need a pretty big addition. As in Klefbom/Larsson type LHD. Not sure there's someone out there right now that fits the mold.

For goalies, there's not alot out there who'd be massive upgrades. Our goalies have played better since our team defence started playing better *what a concept*. Lessening odd man rushes leads to less goals against. "who woulda thought". Scoring the first goal actually helps.

Yes Smith could get injured but Skinner has played well both in the NHL/AHL and we're possibly looking at a home grown starting goalie and he could fill in for either Smith/Koskinen if one gets injured.

Do you think we need to though? I'm just asking. Again there's a case to be made to say yes, but I'm leaning towards no. Maybe Chiarot - but if he costs a 1st and a 3rd, not sure that's worth it at all.

Im always amazed and how quickly fans change …2 weeks ago it was complete and utter chaos in Edmonton and now it’s nothing needs to be done.

Edmonton is not as bad as they showed during the first stretch of the calendar year but they are not a contender. arguably the worst bottom 6, bottom 4 D and goalie tandem in the league.

Oilers are playing well right now but they're riding the new head coach wave. They'll cool off at some point. I wouldn't expect any major moves. Kenny likes to add players and not subtract from his roster. He might include Turris in a trade to offset some cap like he did when he traded Gagner to Detroit.

I know you guys are high on young Niemelainen but I think Nick Leddy is a possibility. He logged alot of minutes for the Isles in the last 3 playoffs. I'm not saying that's the trade. Kenny can't help himself at trade deadlines. He'll be active.

And yes get a goalie! Greiss is available. 😉

Right now I wouldn't touch the roster: Woodcroft and Manson are working their magic right now and are going to have a more complete picture of what their roster has and lacks up to the deadline. But come the deadline? They should still be adding a top-4 LHD and a netminder. I'd like to see a minute-munching, shutdown RHD added to the fold to take some pressure off of Ceci too, who's been an absolute revelation under Manson.

There's nothing inherently wrong with Broberg and Niemelainen playing in the AHL from the deadline to the end of the Condors' Calder run. Everything I've heard about Broberg is that he's still adapting to the vastly longer schedule than what he was accustomed to in Sweden.

Hot take but I'd trade Smith before trading Koskinen. As you've mentioned, Skinner is wonderful insurance and will be full-time next year. I'm happy with him getting starting volume in California so long as the NHL netminders are sitting at or above a .915sv%.

Gimme some paired combination of Braun, De Haan, Lindholm, Pysyk, Manson,Mayfield, and Soucy with a Holtby or Varlamov brought in over Smith and I'd be pretty content headed into playoffs. Under an 11-7 roster setup improvements to Edmonton's defence and Keith returning (who hasn't been complete ass and would be pushed down a pairing) starts to seem a lot more complete.

I think you and I have the exact same takes holy. I've been writing around here about trading Smith for Holtby - which may make sense since we could run Holtby/Skinner next year. I also had previous ACGMs rosters about adding Leddy, Braun, De Haan, Mayfield - pick two of them.

But Barrie's playing better and he's the guy I would've traded for those guys plus maybe Lagesson, and some late picks.

I'd stay away from Leddy. More name value than on-ice value imo.

I'd probably still trade Barrie: if we're hanging onto Koskinen to be the backup the cap needs to come from somewhere. Perhaps it's not a complete indictment on him as a player but he's always been and always will be a luxury. Give me 7 guys that can play in their own end and still move the puck every day of the week.

Coaching change changed everything. Most of the issues or holes I seen can be filled internally but likely wouldn’t have under Tippett. Woodcroft already showing a ton of trust in Niemelianen who in my opinion completely changed the blue line and on his own made them much bigger and tougher. Since I don’t see any glaring issues anymore maybe just going after the biggest impact player available will become more realistic.

I think we at least need another defenceman. And depending on the way goaltending holds up, we might need another guy come March.
