Hawks aren't paying for an overpriced backup goalie carrying that cap hit for multiple years; makes zero sense for them to pay. Now if the Leafs want to pay Chicago then that's a different story.

That is incorrect. If the leafs buy him out, he costs 300K next year, and then $1.1M the following year.

Didn’t see this. It always does. If the money was standard (think same salary with no bonus each year) buying out the deal divides the AAV cap hit by three, but doubles the number of years its in effect.
