Keep Miller. Rangers shouldn’t make a splash like that this year. Maybe in another year or 2. Not enough experience on half the team to go anywhere even with Miller.

So the 6/7 defenceman on a much worse defensive team is better than th 6/7 defenceman on a much much better team? How does that work?

The penguins have already publicly stated they aren't trading away their high round draft picks. So you're probably not getting a 2nd.
They decided to start drafting again when they brought in Hextall and his draft guru team under him.

Dermott is obviously better otherwise you wouldn't add him. If the Leafs add Schenn it would be for a 5-7th round pick. He's not worth more because he is in fact a 7/8 defenceman on any good team..

Yes he is, this is just anti leaf nonsense. A guy who has two superior players in Muzzin and Rielly ahead of him isn't crap because he doesn't play more minutes, he's just a good young player without room to take on more. Add Sandin who looks special and Dermot moves down the depth chart on a superior team. He'd be the 3rd best defenceman in Vancouver who have a horrible defence.

it's not really the point. They don't need to trade 2nds to compete and they are better off trusting Hextall on that. One of the reasons they had to move those picks in the past is JR was just horrible at grading talent and made bad moves. Hextall is much better, a quick look at his offseason of bringing in Heinen and Brock show that. It's all about trusting the process.
They can find a backup if they need to, I'm not sure they really do. It's not like they are winning a cup if Jarry goes down. Almost all teams are out if they lose their starting goalie. It's part of hockey.
So why bother wasting a 2nd. They are pretty much already set to a playoff spot. The rest of the metro is that bad and the only team that looks like a real challenger is CAR. They went from one of the strongest divisions in hockey to blah. That's benefited them. Teams like CBJ getting caught in a sudden rebuild, NYI and PHL falling off the map. All in their favor. The Atlantic has TB and FL and everyone else is suspect. You go down past BOS and you have basically nothing. BOS doesn't really look like much with 1 center. So if there are 8 teams, PIT pretty much assured at this point to be in the top 8. Then it's just a matter of playing well in the playoffs. Your backup isn't going to help with that. If the starter is out, you're basically out. That's true with any team.

motte is worth a late first from the way he is playing.hardest worker player, fast, shifty, awesome pk/defensive players, can occasionally score, throws hits, steals picks, wins battles, good in front presence. nucks aren't giving him up for a 3 and 6 hell no

Canes pass. He'd be a healthy scrath in Raleigh. They're not going to give up that to get him. They'll target a top six winger before they look to improve one of the best bottom sixes in hockey. (Niederreiter - Staal - Fast ; Lorentz - Kotkaniemi - Stepan)

Motte is better than Lorentz and Stepan, he'd bump both of them out of the lineup effortlessly, and Stepan has been getting scratched on and off during the season, where as Motte will never get scratched no matter what team he is on

Stepan got scratched when KK moved to C, he's still Derek Stepan, and plays when he's healthy.

He's just not better than Lorentz. Lorentz is 6'4, hits what moves, and can score. Lorentz has already spent extended time up the lineup. Both are better than Motte. No disrespect to Motte, but what Carolina have is already better

Lorentz is bigger, but Motte is faster and can do everything else that Lorentz can. Motte is also scoring at a higher point pace than Lorentz this season and roughly the same scoring pace as Stepan. I'm a big fan of Lorentz too, but Motte has a lot more league-wide acclaim than Lorentz does. Even if you think everybody outside of the Canes fanbase is overlooking the talents of Lorentz, that's just the way the market is right now

If Stepan is as good as you say, the team shouldn't be scratching him unless he is struggling, that's not a way treat depth players

Lorentz can keep up with Jarvis.. we saw that a few days ago... even if Motte is faster, its negligible, Lorentz is a better goal scorer. Lorentz is also far more flexible with how he fits in the lineup.

Stepan's 157 man, you know he can't play every game, and at some point, they have to get JORDAN MARTINOOK (yeah, he's the healthy scratch right now) into the lineup.

I just said, Motte is scoring at a higher pace than Lorentz

If the Hurricanes management knew that Stepan can't play every game, then he shouldn't have signed him to a contract worth more than league minimum, and it's not a good look that Martinook is being healthy scratched considering his salary either

Not the Canes fault or Martinooks, Jarvis decided to emerge as a 19 year old phenom.

Stepan makes 1.3 to play 4th line minutes, and be a right hand shot, something the Canes didn't have a lot of before Jarvis decided he wanted to be in the NHL this year. His salary is fine.

As for the Lorentz/Motte comparison, Lorentz still scores at a higher G/60... I'd still rather have Lorentz than Motte, and with a team as analytically invested as Carolina, he won't displace Lorentz in the lineup either.

Okay, not disagreeing with you, but I still don't think that just because a rookie emerges means that you just role with healthy scratching players who are have above league min cap hits, they should look to trade Martinook honestly, if there's no room for him in the lineup anymore, and I don't care what he brings to the locker room, there is still the business side of the game,

and the hurricanes have plenty of right-handed forwards even without Stepan and Jarvis. They have Necas, Trocheck, and Fast, they've got their share of right shots up front

3 right-hand shots out of 12 forwards isn't "plenty" it was a serious issue. Especially when 1 is a center, they only had 2 right shot wingers.

When a rookie emerges, someone comes out of the lineup. Just because Martinook makes money doesn't mean he's bad, or he shouldn't be the scratch. He took WELL below market value to come back to the Hurricanes roster (he was rumored to have been offered 2.5-3 by teams like New York), He's an alternate captain, not just that, but he's one of the few depth ties to the 2018-19 ECF run. He's a fan favorite, and he's one of the best analytical bottom 6 guys in the sport. There's no reason to trade him, no need to trade him. That take is lazy, and dumb.
