Description
This lineup gets me very excited and it's very realistic as I only added 1 player that's currently not in the organization. Even if we can't acquire Toffoli, surely there's a top 6 RW out there we can acquire to fill that hole. The reason I chose Toffoli is because MTL is bound to make some changes, we were close to signing him as a UFA before we signed Dadanov, and he trains in Ottawa in the summer so he clearly likes the city.

Tkachuk - Norris - Batherson: Now a legit NHL 1st line and they're only getting better.

Formenton - Stutzle - Toffoli: Formenton/Stutzle have formed great chemistry with their speed Toffoli would be a perfect complement to finish off the line.

Paul - Pinto - Brown: Before Pinto got hurt, these guys were playing 20 min/game against the other teams top lines and shutting them down very well. They can also provide quality secondary scoring. This could be one of the best 3rd lines in the league and each one of them can jump up to the top 6 if needed, especially Pinto/Brown.

Greig - Gambrell - Watson: Just a simple 4th line that will know their role. Perfect place for Greig to come in and get his feet wet.

Chabot - JBD: The pair we have waited for.

Sanderson - Zub: The difference this pair is going to make compared to the other 2nd pairs we've had in the last 5 years (or even decade) will be incredible. It will finally allow Chabby to play less and more quality minutes.

Holden - Brannstrom: Holden has been a nice surprise this year and is perfect to provide a steady partner for Branny. Imagine Chabot/Sanderson/Brannstrom all on different pairs? We will have no issue breaking out the puck like before.

If we can't get rid of Zaitsev's contract, he can still provide a needed veteran presence and is still an NHL defenceman who can fill in anywhere in the top 6.

The goalie's is the biggest question mark of this group. If they can just get average goaltending (.911 save %), I truly believe this is a playoff team. Also look at these powerplay units. For the first time since like 2017, they could have not 1, but 2 units that could be effective.

The key to the season will be getting off to a good start. If you take out the first 15 games (2 - 12 - 1) of 2020-21 and first 20 games (4 - 15 - 1) of 2021-22, they would have playoff records in both seasons -> (21 - 16 - 4) in 2020-21 and (9 - 5 - 2) in 2021-22.

Not saying he’s necessarily worth this, but I don’t think Montreal is settling for anything less than a first for Toffoli, especially within the division, as he had an amazing season last year and is on an extremely good contract regardless

Don't disagree with you but that's not the point of this post. you can toss another prospect in with the 2 2nds if they want

Odds are they’re right, MTL would probably want more for trading within the division. That said, I think I’d rather hedge my bets on signing Kuzmenko or Giroux than pay two seconds plus a prospect or a 1st for Toffoli.

Its not even close.

Toffoli has 109 points in 150 games since the start of the 19-20 season. Thats a 82 game pace of 32 goals and 60 points. He kills penalties and has good defensive metrics. That is bonafide 1st line numbers.

He is on a 4.25 million term that expires in 3 seasons when he is 32 which is an ideal timeline.

He is EASILY worth a 1st ++

I just have a hard time believing that Sanderson, JBD and a Toffoli-type player is enough to bump this team from what (at the moment) is a team projected to win 66pts/82 this year, to the 93ish(+?) that it would take to even get a wildcard spot. That's a pretty significant jump, where you'd essentially need everyone to produce career years. Gotta think that Toronto, Tampa, and Florida don't see major drop offs, and that Detroit continues to move forward. Counting Boston out would be a pretty bold prediction as well. That leaves the Sens trying to fight with the extremely competitive Metro division, which always seems like a dog fight.

That being said, the Sens are certainly going to be a fun, young team moving forward.

You're not going to get a Toffoli-type winger for a couple of 2nds unless you're willing to compromise more on term and/or AAV.

Everyone's making this about the Toffoli trade but that was just a placeholder to show this is what the lineup would look like if and when they acquire a top 6 RW for the upcoming season

I get that but anybody that's paid close attention to them this year knows that they are much better than what their record shows. Not to make too many excuses but in November they went through a stretch where they literally had 15 players out of the lineup with injuries/covid and the NHL was refusing to postpone any games. They went 1-8-0 during that stretch (9 - 5 - 2 since Dec 2). On top of that, they've had their #2, #3, and #5 centres all out for the season. Theres not many teams in the league that would succeed with those holes in the lineup. And lastly, they've had the hardest schedule in the league so far (most games vs. playoffs teams) but have the easiest schedule in the league (most games vs. non-playoff teams) moving forward. I'm not saying they will make the playoffs next year, but they will be right there fighting for a spot and anyone who doesn't believe that will have a surprise coming.
