That defense is god awful. And that bottom 6 is AHL worthy. Truly feel bad for you Oilers fans.

It looks a lot worse with the goaltending been getting. If we saw a string of games got at least league average goaltending that d and bottom six would start looking more respectable. Unfortunately as things stand there really isn’t much options to fix that. Martin jones might be the best goalie Edmonton could realistically pursue.

Not sure I’d trade Koskinen without having another goalie coming back. I know he’s not great but smith has been bad this season as well and has been injured for quite a while. Skinner only has 12 NHL games with a .903 sv% so that’s not a much better option (though his upside is better than koskinen if he can achieve it)..

I don't think you can get leddy and a koskinen dump for a 2nd and a middling prospect.

Those are each worth a 2nd on their own. Especially cause detroit can retain for a better offer on Leddy.

Skinner was at .916 Sv% and had one bad game. he's still not more than a backup at this point though.

I don't think edmonton even needs to add koskinen in on a dump. They can realistically just trade him to Montreal for future considerations.

I completely agree. Honestly I’m just not sure what can realistically be done in net right now.
Unless smith goes ahead and tells Holland it’s his last year we are handcuffed with options. Can’t add term with smith signed next year and skinner can’t be sent down. So just looking at upcoming ufa options.
MAF best option but several complicating factors to fit him in that’s if he’s even willing which I doubt.
Halak would be a target without question for me but realistically if I was van I’d see more value in watching a division team sink rather than throwing a life raft so don’t see as an option.
After that steep drop off to possibly Martin jones which I would be ok with to back up skinner in the short term but once smith comes back I’d rather skinner stay than jones assuming jones doesn’t suddenly turn on beast mode and take the net.
I’m sure there is more options but I look past some of the youthful ones because if skinner is around don’t want two inexperienced guys splitting time.
Holland gets a lot of heat for the moves he’s made but the only one I point to is two year term for smith that has handcuffed us.

Who’s going to give a better deal for leddy without sending money back? Can view kosk however you want reality is not taking term back so he’s off the books before can even use the cap space.

But there lies the issue. Koskinen started out ok and look at him now. You can’t just put all your chips on a goalie with 13 games nhl experience. He has such little experience that one good game or one bad game is going to wildly swing his sv%. He needs more time to be evaluated as a possible starter before being thrown to the wolves and Smith is an injured player that may not ever play like he did last year. Koskinen is literally the best option for stability Edmonton has right now (and that’s condemnation of edmontons management for not addressing this in the off-season, not praise of koskinen). Smith is out indefinitely, skinner is a complete unknown at the nhl level. Most trade options are not real definitive upgrades to koskinen. Names I keep seeing Allen and Korpisalo are lateral at best to koskinen.

Edit: got looking at skinners game logs and he’s been very inconsistent. 10 starts this season, 5 starts below .900 sv%, 1 at .900 sv%, 4 above .921 sv%. Feast or famine

In terms of free agent goalies, Campbell looks like the best choice but you won’t be able to trade for him. You’ll have to hope he walks from Toronto. MAF, Holtby, and Halak are all having decent seasons but Halak and MAF are both Smith age range so they aren’t long term solutions but may be good pickups for the playoffs. Holtby and Kuemper are both 32 and might be decent off-season pickups. There’s Jost not any young goalies with good numbers that are supposedly on the market or upcoming UFAs.

Just looking at rental options can pursue right now.
With smith under contract for next year and skinner won’t be waiver exempt this seems like a messy situation best to resolve in the offseason.
MAF might become available at deadline but not right now.
Halak seems like the top option van might be willing to move now however isn’t it better for van to watch Edmonton burn.
Pretty much everything bellow that seems like a sideways move. This is why I think best off just letting skinner run with it.
