Let's look at this proposal from the point of view of which players you've offered that you'd like to have on your team next year. I think that only Dvorak might -- MIGHT -- fit that description, as Hoffman is a one-dimensional player who hasn't produced in that dimension this year, Chiarot is a rental, and Allen is a completely ordinary back-up goaltender. Now let's look at the other side you've proposed. Bourgault, Holloway, Broberg and the first-round draft pick are all assets that Edmonton considers semi-essential elements of their future. So this trade is Dvorak -- a guy who does little more than move Nugent-Hopkins from #3C to #2LW -- for what the Oilers expect to be four first-line players, plus some window-dressing thrown in on each side. And by the way, I would evaluate Barrie as more valuable than Hoffman.
Bottom line: by any rational standard, this is a terrible trade for Edmonton.
