Quoting: palhal
Why do the fans of their favourite team that Vegas will be willingly to take a bad player on a bad contract and be so mesmerized by a third round pick.
Still leaves Vegas with 120m cap hit (at least) for a few years...but they will have 30 third round picks.
Agreed PalHal, it's painful to see all the time; just like when AGMs use a little buzz phrase to make their cap dump to Vegas sound appealing (great on PK, veteran presence, PP specialist, etc.).
But, to play the devil's advocate, won't Vegas be looking to gain futures to make playoffs in 2019-2020? The more picks the better if they can't get a potential impact NHLer. Here's an example (using the team I know best haha)
STL would love to lose Lehtera but Vegas doesn't want him.
Taking the offer of Lehtera and a 3rd might sound more appealing than taking, say, Jaskin). They likely can't trade Jaskin for anything better than the 3rd rd pick they would receive. Basically, each team is exposing players of different quality, so the compensation picks for deterrence should all be based on what they are protecting. Blues have little to protect, little to lose.
Other teams have different situations. Example: the Wild or the Ducks would have to give up a hell of a lot more than a 3rd because Vegas could get a much better return on the market (than Jaskin) if they grab Brodin/Dumba or Vatanen/Manson.
