Scoring and special teams. Their PK has been really really bad
We're quick to blame the gm.. but when you look at all of Benning's trades, they've turned out good for the most part (even if he gets it wrong, he finds a way to correct it, such as Gudbranson for Pearson). Now, when we look at coaching, we can see the Canucks have been trending in a dangerous direction for years. Under Green, the Canucks have the 27th worst record in the NHL. Our powerplay during that time frame was ranked 14th in the league with a 20% success rate (1 goal every 5 PP for on AVG), our PK, however, 26th at 78.8% (a hair under 1 goal allowed every 5 pp against on AVG). People say that our special teams (especially PK) have been way better until this year, so here are our year-on-year placings since green took over which show that our special teams under Green have been trending to be a middle of the pack at best:
2017-2018 (Sedin twins' last year): PP - 9th overall, 21.5% | PK - 21st overall, 78.3%
2018-2019: PP - 22nd overall, 17.1% | PK - 11th overall, 81.1%
2019-2020: PP - 4th overall, 24.2% | PK - 16th overall, 80.5%
2020-2021: PP - 25th overall, 17.4% | PK - 17th overall, 79.8%
2021-2022 (so far): PP - 23rd overall, 16.2% | PK - 32nd overall, 62.3%
(the inconsistencies from year to year, especially on our powerplay is very alarming, as our powerplay was considered a "strength" under green given our personnel. This shows that our powerplay relies more on chance/luck than it does on Green.
General excuses for poor performances in recent years:
1. Poor faceoff percentages: Our centres during Green's tenure have been ranked 8th league-wide, with 51.2% FOW.
2. Our team can sustain defensive negligence like Toronto, as we are offensively heavy: Our team ranks 24th in GF/GP with 2.77. Our GA/GP ranks 26th at 3.15. Additionally, we are 6th in shots against during Green's tenure sitting at an average of 32.5 SA/GP. We sit 26th in SF/GP with 30.2.
3. We manage to grind out results and get OT points: Well, actually, we sit 27th league-wide in points, with a .481 p%.
It is easy to blame personnel. We like to do so quite often in Vancouver. That's why previous GM's such as Mike Gillis & coaches such as AV were let go. But, how often do we actually have a clear-cut answer that our current system is doing us little favours? Our goalies are being overworked, a lot of our wins, we owe to Marky and Demmer playing unbelievably well. We could not sustain the luck we had at the beginning of Green's tenure, and it shows. If we don't move on from him, it'll only get worse. Any improvement on the ice is tied to the players, and them alone. I cannot find a single thing that Green has done to improve our players minus bag skates and the ever so common dump and chase tactic (you know its a problem when a player like EP40 is favouring a dump and chase rather than playing to his own skills).
