McDonagh becomes one of the 30 oldest D in the league this season it's just getting likelier he declines in a big way and DET need that cap space open

I think you guys are way overblown on the age issue considering he’s only 32 and everyone acts like he’s gonna die tomorrow. He’s still a very effective defenseman as shown by his most recent play in the playoffs. This same logic is what I’ve never understood when the Rangers didn’t want to resign him and are now doing the same with Mika most likely. Not everyone falls off a cliff at 30. It is beyond delusional to think so. If you don’t like the contract that’s valid as it is a large one, but predicting an impending demise when the on ice play hasn’t indicated is crazy to me.

No one says he's declining or is set to decline heavily, they just say he declines to accept the trade. I would love to have McDonough on the red wings but he isn't waiving his NMC for Detroit and that cap space might be more valuable to the team down the road.

Again no one is saying he is not a good defenseman, but he is 32 and is signed for 5 more years at 6.75 million in cap hit. That is a long time as he will be 37 when the contract ends and that could be a problem in the waning years of his deal. Not every player falls off the cliff so to speak at 30 but time is not on his side moving forward and a club which is rebuilding with young players and new contracts needed in 2 to 4 years would do well not to take on older players with larger contracts and give the GM cap headaches.

I think he’s from the Midwest and wouldn’t mind being closer to home? Also don’t forget he can retire well before 37 or injury? Example seabrook.

As far as Calgary, I think the trade happens at the tdl therefore won’t need as much cap space and could see them moving Johnny hockey at the tdl as well.
