My lineups part 5

Description
I would consider this franchise to be the definition of mediocrity. They haven’t made the playoffs very often in the last decade and whenever they do, they usually don’t get past the first round. I feel the Calgary Flames are going to be terrible this season especially in net. If I’m right about that, they need to start making some big changes, including the firing of Brad Treliving who I feel should have been gone a long time ago.

I love how Markstrom instantly becomes a terrible goaltender when he signed his contract in CGY... completely weird the bandwagons hockey fans jump on... Markstrom is top 15 in the league at a minimum

This team is awkwardly built and I hear your line on the always in the middle. But they have some great pieces.
1 - Coleman and Thachuk should be in the same line cause they will crash bang and score it would work with either top 6 Center.
2 - Should have already moved Gaudreau, he doesn't;t fit with the rest of the team and get something back for top 6 Winger. His time here is done.
3 - Gudbrason and Välimäki aren't gonna cut it, need 2 other D for a good bottom pairing and Zadorov should be top 4 to balance out D.

1. True, that's likely why they played together in camp today
2. What? Gaudreau was like the #1 forward to buy into Sutter's system last year, you don't have to be big physical to be tough to play against. Gaudreau is an elite playmaker and offensive dynamo, he is a threat every time he touches the ice.
3. I take it you dont know much about Valimaki, the kid was a rookie last year and has #1 potential, saying he's "not going to cut it" makes no sense. Guddy is a bottom pair guy that fits Sutter's system well, overpaid yes but still a decent NHL player

If you watched Marky play after he returned from his injury, he was an absolute beast in net and bounced back from a bad season until then

Gaudreau seems to want out he doesn't seem happy, and if your gonna make a big change then he is the best way to do it. Better players get better returns.
I did watch Välimäki and I think he is a great prospect, I just don't think he is ready for a top 4 role this year, might be best to spend at least half the season a the top D man in AHL, get all the minutes then he can make a better impact on 2nd pairing next year or later this year if you make some moves.

Prior to his concussion Markstrom was 10th in SV% among starters last year. Behind Backwood, MAF, Grubrauer, Vasilevskiy, Varlamov, Petersen, Driedger, Shesterkin, and Lankinen (Blackwood had only played 3 games at this point so you can choose to count him or not, I personally did).

After his concussion and up until Sutter fully implemented his system (about 15 games after becoming coach) Markstrom was 2nd last among goalies starters in SV%, only ahead of Hart. Symptoms of concussions averagely last up to 3 months so it is very likely he was still effected by it for a while after returning to play.

Once Sutter's system was in place (using this as more of a timeline) Markstrom finished out the season once again with the 10th best SV% among starters. Behind only Greiss, Varlamov, Nedeljkovic, Fleury, Smith, Merzlikins, Saros, Rask, and Jarry (Lehner also had a slightly better record but I chose to count him as the Vegas backup even though both him and MAF played the same amount of games to end the year)

Gaudreau has done absolutely nothing to imply he wants out and pretty much everything to imply he wants to stay. Hell at his wedding 2 weeks ago his mother made a post saying how they hope to be part of the Flames family for a very long time. Don't base your opinions of Gaudreau off Eric Francis, he's literally only employed because of his mother.

Zero chance Valimaki isn't a full time member of the NHL next year, He will likely start on the 3rd pair this year but will probably be partnered with Tanev by at latest the half way point of the season. Look at what Tanev did for both Hughes and Hanifin, he is the perfect mentor for a young high potential player
