Description
Hertl has made it clear he is displeased with sharks and their actions to handle kane's situations, he also announced that he is in no rush to decide on a contract extension now if im a sharks fans this would worry me and before you compare it to bergy's situation they are completely different. Boston is all in and i guarantee you if bruins win the cup he will retire but if they don't he comes back for another push he's also 36, in hertl's situation hes only 28, san jose has been on massive decline and with couture, burns, karlson and valsic's large and close to un-movable cap hits the odds they could build a winning roster around him are close to impossible. So san jose do you think a player whos heading into his prime and is about to become a ufa will resign to a team that is gonna be a bottom 6 team for the next few years i think NO. so explain to me why you believe you could pry a team of their best prospect, a top young forwards and a first round pick that makes literally no sense when a team can take their chances of signing him in ufa. Now here is where sharks fan will say well we are in control and we won't take an offer that's worth less then his full value. Well unfortunately you don't have control at this rate it will be almost guaranteed by TDL Hertl won't be returning so the odds of you getting the best package for him will be very low. Now to the trade Debusk, beecher a 1st more and 3rd is almsot equivalent to the value of 3 1sts, idc what people think but debrusk is still a skilled young forward one bad season does not define a players a career, but it comparison to other forwards eichel for ex. his trade value is that of 4 first round quality players and picks, but the thing with eichel is buffalo has control, eichel is signed long term he's also younger and has yet to reach his full potential, with hertl you already know what you are getting. The chances of san jose bringing in a package even nearly close to eichels value is laughable

That’s the thing though Dvorak has term, Hertl doesn’t and Hertl has showed no signs of wanting to resign in San Jose with train wreck that’s going on there. The roster is bad it doesn’t have this stacked prospect core better then Boston’s for sure but that ain’t much considering we’ve been a dominant team for 10+ seasons. There is nothing to look forward to in San Jose until karlson, burns, vlasic and coutures contracts are off the book

He has very specifically stated that he is focusing on playing hockey and being a leader on the team this year. He has never once mentioned that he wanted out or that he did not like it in San Jose. He wants to wait it out and that’s fine, he should. If the team is good, he will want to stay, but if they aren’t contenders he will want a chance to contend this year I’m sure. Can we just stop with trying to spin these interviews, which haven’t been done in English I may add, to fit what it is you want to believe?

Explains to me why he wouldn’t retire? If bruins win the cup that’s it chances are they won’t see it again for a while. Why wouldn’t he end his career on a high note of being a champion? Also you think Hertl is worth a 1st and a 3rd I think what I’m willing to offer is much more valuable as debrusk and Beecher are in the trade as well

Because he likes hockey and money? Maybe he wants to play in the olympics? Very few guys hang it up when they are playing like him. He’s kinda got 41 year old third line mentor written all over him.

Yes, I think this is an overpay

First and a third is the going rate

I respectfully disagree. Sam Bennett, who (at that point) was a guy with a 50/50 chance of being non-tendered got the equivalent of 2 2nds last year at the deadline. Foligno got a 1st+4th to be 50% retained. David Savard got a 1st+3rd. Palmieri+Zajac, both of who were having down seasons, returned a 1st+3rd.

Hertl>all of these guys. If SJ finds the right time to strike, they should be targetting a better-than-Pageau type haul.

You know what, looking back maybe you're right. I copied an interesting trade deadline look back though. IMO, the Kevin Hayes trade is probably the most reasonable though, which was a 1st, Lemieux (recent 31st OA pick) and a 4th. I just thought about this, but the 3 team list in his NTC probably handcuffs the Sharks return as well. The more I think about it, the more likely it seems that the Sharks return is "meh", or that they somehow convince him to re-sign.

Here's the returns from the past 6 or 7 years at the deadline that seem relevant with a 1st+ included. A fun exercise. Cheers!

-Kevin Hayes netted a 1st, Brendan Lemieux and a 4th.
-Ryan Hartman netted a 1st, euro prospect and a 4th.
-Martin Hanzal got a 1st, 2nd, conditional pick and body.
-Shatty went for a 1st, 2nd, Zach Sanford and extra body.
-Ladd went for a 1st, 3rd and Marko Dano (who was still considered a solid prospect at the time).
-Marty St. Louis went for a 1st, Ryan Callaghan and 2nd.
-The Buffalo Sabres traded Ryan Miller and Steve ott to the St. Louis Blues for a 2015 first-round pick, Jaroslav Halak, Chris Stewart, William Carrier and a 2016 conditional third-round pick.

Haha, I know right? At the time, Ejdsell was considered to be a decent prospect as well.
