Description
Do nothing. Let KK walk. This deal that was accepted by KK was a slap in the face of the team he plays for, which he is entitled to do but Habs don't have to like it either. The gross overpayment that was clearly a joke/revenge offer from a rival team. The 20$ signing bonus. All of it. Good for KK but if that's how he wants to operate in negotiation then let him walk. 6M+ for the next 6 years for a guy that is hardly a 2M player right now is silly. Matching this offer sends a bad message to the rest of the team. IMO. (and frankly I don't blame the Canes one bit, this was 100% MB's fault when they OS Aho at a contract that was sure to be matched....dumb, just dumb move by MB at the time - Waddell just showed you how to do a SMART offer sheet)

Anyway, sign a vet just to help the young C core, someone like Bozak whose still capable of playing up and down the lineup in a variety of roles in the short term. Try Poehling and Evans with more responsibility to start the year. If all goes to hell, make move in season. There are TONS of high end UFA's at the end of the year we can explore. There are TONS of trade options to explore in season. Habs are now stocked with picks and prospects to make a deal if they need to but do it once you know what you have first. Not to mention they have tons of cap space this year now to use as they need. Trade deadline could be more interesting with cap space and extra draft picks.

Panicking now would be silly. No Eichel. No Monahan. No any big name center while other teams are asking for the moon. With Zuke playing #1 minutes and the addition of Bozak to shelter Evans and Poehling from harder matchups, they can definitely still compete. Not ideal I know but making a panic move now is also not ideal, two wrongs don't make a right here. Asses your team later when you know what you have first and who knows maybe something surprising happens.

What if Poehling proves he's a top 2/3 center? He was very very good in Laval this year. He looked like the confident Poehling that scored a hattrick in his first NHL game again. What if Evans proves he's a bonafide #3? He's not a kid anymore, the guy is 25 and already trusted with defensive matchups by his coach. Maybe give him an actual shot at doing what Danault did. Maybe he won't be a Selke candidate but then again, we don't need him to be. He just needs to progress which he's done every year so far. Lets see what he can do.

There was no guarantee KK would even be capable of taking on the top 2 minutes and exceling. He struggled last year during the season while being given more minutes and responsibility to prove his worth and wasn't trusted enough in the playoffs at times. Why is everyone assuming he is a 60 point player next year with more minutes? So far in his young career he hasn't given anyone any indication he will be worth 6M+ for the next 6 years at all. Overpaying KK means Habs will HAVE to overpay every other RFA player on the team in coming years because his matching sets a new precedent: Top dollar or else I'll accept an OS. Set a new precedent with not matching. Let everyone know threat offers like this won't be accepted here. Its a hard pill to swallow but KK made his bed. Now time for Habs to do so also.

If KK had earned the contract in the 6M range and Habs were offering 2M, I'd be all for KK getting paid here. What he did was greedy and I'm all for the Habs letting him go. Him signing a bogus joke/revenge offer like this shows his true colors that its top dollar no matter what. I guarantee you Gallagher would not have signed it. Gally have done the right thing and would have gone to MB and worked out a better offer than they were previously offering while using this OS as leverage. Forcing MB to raise his price but at least he does it under MB's terms and not through a threat OS where the manager is basically screwed either way.

Losing KK sucks but it is not the end of the world.

Pissed that he took it. But bergevin and claude Julien with a little from ducharme(although that’s a playoff push) have really dicked around the kid. He was excelling at the beginning of the season playing with armia and toffoli and people around the league thought this could be his breakout year. Then armia got concussed and they moved toffoli up with Suzuki as nick was playing like ****. For three years they’ve given the kid no minutes and a rotating door of wingers meaning he could never get Comfortable or gain confidence

I want him back but I also want him to go to Carolina and excel, and truly give a 🖕 To bergevin.

As for the season I agree. Don’t do anything drastic. If they somehow play well enough to make the playoffs that’s great, if they fall off a cliff we get a top 10 pick in a stacked draft

Fully agree @F50marco, just let him go and see what happens.

Acquire a C in free agency:

- Bozak would be the perfect short term solution for this season.
- Poehling and Evans have the perfect opportunity to prove themselves at the NHL this season.
- I'll also add Drouin has something to prove, maybe he could play some C again (which would also solve the winger issue we were discussing the other day). An offensive line of Hoffman - Drouin - Anderson makes sense on paper.

KK only produced at a rate of 1.3 P/60 at 5v5 last season, worse than every single player named above (except Poehling - no data there). KK is easily replaceable for the short term.

Suzuki has to be signed next and then Caufield... wouldn't want them getting an ideas from KK.

I've been thinking it over, and while I understand that KK is young and was likely advised to sign by his agent regardless of the $20, I'm having trouble believing either teammates or fans would see it that way.
Even IF he opposed it, Carolina said take it or leave it, and his agent convinced him it would be better for him, the optics are bad. Suddenly he lacks character and is a sell out.
MAYBE he can recover his reputation by firing his agent and apologizing, but Montreal fans aren't exactly known for being forgiving. He's going to face backlash and he won't be treated the same in the room.
If we match, this year is going to be miserable for him and I don't see him performing well under that pressure.

I was already tempted to let him walk simply because I don't believe Carolina actually expects us to, but I think these factors confirm it. I was cheering for him and hopeful this was going to be his year, but I think I'm going to switch to hoping we lose him and he completely bombs. It's a shame, because the guys really seemed to like the kid.

If this was just a business move, I wouldn't hold anything against him. He did however allow Carolina to spit in the Habs' face through him. I don't see how that just slides.

I hope it will be the case, because Bergevin could miss lots of opportunities if we enter cap hell by matching this offer like you said, either during the year or next offseason. I like the kid, but didn't like his (non) progress after his rookie year.

Quoting: Shanesaw9

- I'll also add Drouin has something to prove, maybe he could play some C again (which would also solve the winger issue we were discussing the other day).

Let me say this, IF I was confident KK would have a monster year next year, my stance on this would have changed. I DONT think KK will live up to this contract and that's why I really hate how this transpired.

Fans will be on him for not producing.
Coach will be on him for not producing.
Management will be on him for not producing.
His teammates will be on him for not producing despite being happy for him, the human being, for getting paid.

He will be in a position where he has to really produce for him to push through this.

Also, I don't absolve him of any criticism because it was a "business move". If the roles were flipped, and the team just did the player dirty by just doing a "business move" in order to get bottom dollar, we'd be ALL over them too.

I have however, slightly changed my opinion on how to proceed. I think resigning him and putting him in every position to succeed makes more sense for the TEAM right now but I might ship him off elsewhere the minute I can if negotiations on his next contract prolong and for hopefully more than a late 1st and 3rd which will in the end be a better return. That way the Canes revenge OS was really just more of a nuisance than anything and can be considered settled after this.

The problem is, what if he is given all this opportunity and still doesn't live up to his contract? I feel this is more likely than the latter and we're not wrong to think that.
