They wouldn't trade him strictly for futures unless it was earlier this summer and they had a decent Top 4 dman in their sights as a replacement.

They will have an issue with his next contract, so it's not a sure thing he's around long term. There's also the issue that the majority of $7M+ long term contracts signed by players 28 yo and older usually end badly.

Then just keep him as your "rental" of sorts for this season. That's what contenders typically do.
