Stealing Pettersson or Giving Vancouver Headaches

Description
Might have to trade White at some point for cap room, should have enough for Norris/Stutzle/Brannstrom/JBD/Pinto bridges as they come off their ELCs and the cap goes up a bit. If we want to lock in Stutzle long term, that’s the scenario when White likely needs to get dealt, or if Pinto really breaks out. Sanderson comes off his ELC and Batherson’s bridge expires when Murray/Zaitsev end.

Going to have to offer far more to give benning a headache that he didn’t already create. I would say petterson is looking likely to be 9.5m on a 6 year deal. 750k and a year less won’t kill the Nucks.

One thing to remember is the Pettersson and Hughes have the same agent, and that agent is very aware that if Pettersson signs for above market value, it takes away possible dollars for Hughes. This offer sheet is easily matched by Van, but then only leaves around 6 million left for Hughes. It would be pretty irresponsible of the agent to go this route. Unless the offer sheet is $11 million+ on a short to medium term deal, it is not a threat. All this offer sheet does is take money off the table for Hughes

Hughes can easily be bridged we’ve seen Werenski, McAvoy, and Sergachev sign 3 year bridges for 5M or leas.

They should but Hughes is RFA and Boeser will be next year too. Miller and Horvat UFa the following year...

They'll have to trade someone soon

Am I missing something? CF says the Canucks currently have $10,664,341 in cap space

Benning will pay assets to dump Myers similar to what he did to dump eriksson/beagle/roussell. He’s fully committed now so I don’t see him stopping the short term movies

Well that would nice for Ottawa at least this year. Then Norris and Tkachuk to sign next season, and now the Sens are right against the cap or over it.

You are missing something. You’re forgetting that we have to send down like 3 players freeing up like 2.5 million dollars. We then place Ferland on LTIR which frees up another 3.5 dollars. We actually have like 17 mil in cap space

Yeah that figure is for a roster size of 24 players. Once you add Hughes and Pettersson, it becomes 26 players. Since you can only have a maximum of 23, Canucks would have to waive 3 players. Let’s say they are all 750k leave minimum players, that’s and additional 2.25 million. Then add in that Ferland hasn’t been placed on LTIR yet. That opened up potentially 3.5 million more. So actually cap space to sign Patterson and Hughes is closer to 16.4 million.

However, it would likely end up being closer to 16.24 million, since they will likely have Podkolzin start on the main roster as well, which would involve them waiving another 750k contract to add Podkolzins 925k, which eats up an additional 175k in cap space

Oh right, didn't see that CF had the Canucks roster at 24/23 (not sure why lol)

It also looks like Ferland is already (calculated) on LTIR, you're forgetting about Luongo's recapture penalty here (and Holtby buyout)

If you add Forward+Defense+Goaltending AAVs, it's roughly 63 M$ + 3.5 (Luongo + Holtby)

Anyway, Pettersson and Hughes should be bridged to buy a bit of time. Really doubt any team goes for an offer sheet.

Is he really gonna get 9.5mil? Figured he was looking more at the Tkachuk/Barzal bridge at this point, given the Canucks cap. Even after moving Ferland to LTIR and sending down two guys, the Canucks only have ~15.5mil for a 23 man roster. Signing Petey for 10.275mil only leaves about 5.3mil for Hughes, which is obviously too low even for a bridge. This would force them to run less than a full roster (which, without a taxi squad and with covid still around, would really suck) AND bridge Hughes, meaning they get neither of them locked up long term. The Sens could force the issue further by reducing the term to 4 years if they really wanted to try and pry him away from the Canucks, as being forced to bridge Hughes (leaving him with the option of taking a 1-year arb award to get to UFA), and walking Petey straight to UFA is quite possibly the worst case scenario for Vancouver, and might cause them to consider letting go of him. Ultimately it’s not as serious of a concern for Ottawa, as 4 years of Petey is easily worth two 1sts and the worst case scenario is the status quo, with another team financially crippled.

That shouldn’t matter. You do the best for your client, and if this is the most money for Pettersson then he should sign it. If he leaves Vancouver then Hughes (and thus his agent as well) gets even MORE money than anticipated. If both stay the agent maxes out as taking all of Vancouver’s cap regardless, so telling Petey to divvy it up more fairly is just silly, accepting the offer sheet is the option that maximizes potential value for both Petey and his agent, and they can figure out Hughes later.

Norris is the only one to sign next year, Tkachuk is locked up for 8 years in this hypothetical. We also have over 11mil cap room right now, the cap goes up by a mil next year and likely more in the following season when we have to sign Stutzle and Pinto, and then after that Murray/Zaitsev are done. Plus White is expendable at any point in time. I don’t think the cap headaches will be that bad, as long as we don’t overpay a mediocre free agent.

From The agent perspective for Pettersson and Hughes, Pettersson signing an O/S is not in the best interest for Hughes, since it eats into The money available for Hughes’s next contract. If petterssons market value on a 5 year deal is, say, 9 million, and he signs an OS for 10.26 million, then it’s a 1.26 million dollar surplus for Pettersson. BUT it forces hughes to sign a 2 or 3 year bridge.

I’m not saying that this scenerio won’t happen, but it does pose a bit of an ethical dilemma for the agent

I’m saying it doesn’t pose an ethical dilemma though, you get the best deal for the client that you can, and if the first one to sign affects the second, you deal with that later. At the end of the day, he knows that the 16 or so million dollars Vancouver has left are all his. If Petey gets a guaranteed 10.275 of that, then he can push Hughes’s bridge to the brink of the remaining cap space by pushing for 5-6, rather than taking 5-6 on a bridge anyway and leaving money on the table because Petey signed for 9. This also gets Petey to UFA very quickly (only one UFA year bought, Ottawa could probably offer 0 years bought) and a bridge for Hughes gives him arb rights to get to UFA and make huge bank ASAP as well. The agent isn’t going to give bad advice to Petey to protect Hughes, they are both his clients. He’ll advise Pettersson on the best route for Pettersson, which is taking the OS and getting to UFA, and then figure out the best deal for Hughes based on that. They don’t have to come as a package deal, and while it may not seem to turn out great for Hughes if accepted, it’s honestly within reason of what a bridge would be regardless, and if Vancouver lets Petey walk it’s significantly more beneficial for Hughes, as the Canucks are left with 15mil and only him to sign for whatever dollar figure he wants.
