On September 1 of last year (i.e., prior to the delayed 2020 draft) I proposed trading Marc-Andre Fleury and Las Vegas' 2020 first-round pick for Gustavsson, the Dallas 2020 second, which became Egor Sokolov, and the Ottawa 2020 fourth, which the Sens traded for the signing rights to Joshua Brown.

The very first response I got was from a Sens adherent: "Ottawa doesn’t need a goalie, we’d rather let ours develop. We’re especially not trading for a 36yo at the cost of probably our 2nd best goalie prospect."

Six weeks later, Ottawa signed Matt Murray to a four-year, $6.25 million AAV deal with increasing compensation (last year, $8 million).
