if seattle is going to skip over taking kassian for free, why would a team out there pay a fourth to get him? especially a team that will value their picks more than most right now.

edit: i will add a litte here, the above isnt meant to be a dick head comment, i re read it and it come across that way, i apologize. i think the oilers are in tough, as much as they have all the top end talent in the world, most of their bottom 6 talent is negative value guys which is really clogging up the bottom 6 unfortunately. it straps them in terms of using players in a trade to get supplementary pieces for mcdavid. i think there needs to be some value adds in the bottom 6 the same way toronto has done with thornton, simmonds and spezza, tough to do in markets like calgary and edmonton though.

Sounds reasoning right here.

Two reasons Detroit 4th for Kassian doesnt work...

1. Kassian is 30 with $3.2 Cap Hit for 3 more years. Detroit will not pay an asset to take a CAP dump. He doesnt fit any need in Detroit for that 3 year period and that pick might turn out to be better after that same 3 year period. Either way, the value of the 4th rounder is more.

2. Holland is an idiot... He would give Detroit a 2nd and Kassian to get him off the books. Yzerman knows Holland so well that Yzerman could likely get Holland to give up his 1st and Kassian for that 4th rounder. Even then I think its tough with 3 years left on the deal.

Kassian is on the Oilers protected list.

right, i think that still shocks me a bit. good catch. either way, no one should be giving up assets for kassian.

Maybe if he was a center or a LHD but I just don't see Detroit giving up a pick for 30yr old winger with 3yrs left on his contract.

Still doesn’t make him valuable. Holland signed that contract and obviously sees something in him just like he paid for Keith. You’ll see a trend with Holland on his trades/re-signings.

Kassian was Zach Hyman for a period of 1 year and completely took over the playoff series against san jose in 2017. There are rumblings that teams like the new york rangers are calling on him so that they have someone they can put on the ice to deter tom wilson.

Strawman. I wrote nothing about his value, I was just pointing out that the initial comment wasn't sound reasoning at all.

Can you provide a source for these rumblings? Seems like clickbait based on the Buch & Panarin incident as I remember seeing them linked to anyone that can remotely fight but the main point is nothing even remotely credible.

OP has Detroit trading for him (positive value), I’m saying Holland protecting him still doesn’t make him an attractive addition.

I think the wording is critical as it sounds an awful lot like speculation. He never said I heard but “I think there’s been some interest in Kassian”. Then follows it up with you don’t protect players you think have value and gave an Anaheim example. Either way it’s still not a great fit with Detroit as we already have Bertuzzi, Erne, and Smith that play with that edge.

There's nothing about Detroit in that quote, I don't see a fit either.

I was putting that bit about Detroit more in there for OP or some random poster having to read this thread.
