Description
Assumptions for this scenario:
1. Weber will retire and be put on LTIR
2. Drouin has very little value to trade but is not ready to play yet. He is put on LTIR
3. Danault walks (sigh)
4. Allen will be targeted by Seattle hence the habs look for trading partners

Overpay for Allen, we can do better in UFA market and keep our picks.

Trading Weber makes no sense, if we keep him and put him on LTIR ourselves it opens up almost 8 mil in cap space for Montreal to add a player or two. Why not use that as opposed to trading him?

Just a clarification, I think retiring and going on LTIR are mutually exclusive concepts. Like a player can be in quotations "medically retired" but actually walking away from the contract has different ramifications

We hold the high ground in that Weber trade. We don’t have to send him back but Nashville doesn’t want to be screwed over if he does retire. I don’t think you need to add that 2nd of even harris

And if they don’t want to make the deal we’ll take the cap space and they can eat the 5 million a year

No it doesn't with Weber Montreal's cap limit is essentially 89.5 Mil by trading him our cap limit is 81.5 Mil

LTIR rules confuse me, but how does that work? Wouldn't the 89.5 be with Weber's salary included in that total? So essentially it would still be 81.5, as Weber wouldn't be playing.

It makes no sense for Weber to retire, instead of going on LTIR - which doesn't affect NSH in any way. MTL has no leverage here, and the Preds have no reason to make a terrible trade with the Habs because of Weber.

If you’ve read any of the articles about this. They’re saying that if he can’t play again the league might force him to retire so they can’t use the ltir. They’re sick of people working around the cap recapture penalty, so there is a good chance he could retire

If his multiple injuries are preventing him from playing, that's exactly what LTIR is for. Seeing as how Weber's contract was the result of a predatory offer sheet, instead of something the Preds voluntarily drew up, it's difficult to imagine the league trying to punish the franchise. It's not like NSH was spending to the cap or benefitting from the cap circumvention years on Weber's contract back then anyway.

1. yes the cap limit is still 81.5 Mil HOWEVER when you put a player (Weber) on LTIR you can then exceed the cap by the amount of the player on LTIR, this is how Tampa was able to go over the cap by 18 Mil before the playoffs and still technically be cap compliant.

2. I think why so many people on here are proposing to trade Weber to Nashville is because the NHL has not approved Weber to be placed on LTIR and are potentially not going to allow it. In that case Nashville will have to either trade for Weber and buy him out or eat the cap hit but (disclaimer) no one really knows if the NHL will allow the Habs to place Weber on LTIR and if they don't then Nashville isn't going to be able to either which again makes this trade irrelative anyway LOL.

Oh ok yes I understand now. Thanks for clarifying. Then in that case, if the league approves, Weber can remain on LTIR and we can sign another high-impact player (Savard, Hoffman, etc.) or they can explore trading for both Killorn and Gourde while not trading for Johansen and keeping some picks
