Description
Obviously the Miller trade is not going to happen but I'm curious of Vancouver fans would be interested. Obviously losing Gally isn't ideal but the habs are too deep at RW for them to have him at that cap number. And I don't see that contract aging well. Drouin I think they should trade but I doubt they will get the return that they should. If they don't then convince him to stay. Maybe he will regain some early season form and increase his trade value. Losing Danault will suck short term but I honestly think someone is going to pay him 6mil on the open market. I can' t see the habs paying that nor should they. Evans and Poehling imo will be a very good 3rd and 4th line centers for the next decade. Poehling is very underrated on this site. Lehky and Armia's contracts are hard to predict but they are both valueable bottom 6 forwards that the habs should keep for the right price. And Barrie's contract is essentially just a salary holder for Suzuki's contract next year. They can afford an overpay for one year.

Imo this team has a legit shot at winning/being competitive if KK establishes himself as a 2C (which could be his breakout season) and Romanov can fill Chiarot's place with ease.

The big goal they should have this offseason would be not to screw themselves with hefty longer term deals that would make the KK, Suzuki, Caufield and Romanov upcoming new deals a lot harder to manage.

VAN would rather keep Miller, he can play all forward positions and all special teams. VAN would want Romanov, which MTL is not going to do.

You’re in the finals down 3-1…. They are already legit winning and being competitive.. win the cup, I doubt it but it’s still possible. Losing Gallagher, who’s been the heart and soul of the team isn’t going to work out. I do like JTM but I don’t think he gives the same thing gally does

Not saying that the trade proposed is bad for Montreal or Vancouver. But geez the Habs GM would be on the list of "dishonest" GMs to negotiate with if he trades Gallagher who signed an extension with a NTC.

Everyone loves Gally as they should, more effort than any other play i've seen. But they need a LW and need to sacrifice something to get one, they can afford losing a RW, his contract is not going to age well at all, I would not be shocked if his production falls off drastically over the next couple years and they need the cap room going forward. Miller isn't the same player but he brings a lot more because he plays LW. You're essentially trading a third line RW for a first or second line LW

Fans would hate him for it forsure, but as a GM you need to act like this is a business and not try to appease the fans. Winning will appease the fans lol. And at least he'd be traded to a city he would enjoy since he is from there

Yup, I get that. Which is why you’d also need to add a prospect that makes you uncomfortable losing

An A prospect would be too much to add to this package imo. But a good B propect like Harris, Struble, Mysak, etc would be manageable

Tatar vs Miller

149 pts in his last 198 games
165 pts in his last 197 games
(JT with much better linemates)

Career 6.7 corsi rel %
Career 1.5 corsi rel %
(Tatar barely played with Datsyuk)

Tatar 75th percentile in xGA Miller 49th

Why pay when you can just re-sign him 🤷‍♂️

Advance analytics don't really work with Tatar. Don't forget how many games he played with Danault and Gally which inflated those numbers. There is a reason this isn't the first time he has been benched in the playoffs

The issue at hand is VAN wouldn’t consider this unless they received a high tier prospect for their future to make up for the decline of a 6.5M 3rd liner. So we could talk about “fair” value today or we could be realistic with how to run a business and franchise. If you think it’s fair than VAN is saying no all day long. If both guys were on a 1 year deal then ya, a pick or mid prospect could balance it.

Van would get a good prospect and two 2nd round picks on top of Gally. My opinion is that his production will decrease, that doesn't mean Benning and MB also think that. Obviously MB wouldn't give him that contract if he thought he would

Thanks, I checked it out, all the best to Drouin, he's a good player, gets a lot of unwarranted flack on here and elsewhere imo.

Want to bet? No one even knows what truly is going on with him. Its mostly speculation about mental health. You don't have a clue if he is playing or not and I would bet he is. Pretty rare to have someone through away 5.5mil

I agree that we will regret the Gally contract in the last year or two of it, however we should enjoy Gally for the next 4 years.
I don't think we need a top line LW if we convert Caufield from RW to LW.
Lines: 1- Caufield Suzuki Anderson
2- Toffoli KK Gally
3- Byron Evans Lehky
4- Armia Staal Perry
Lines 1 and 2 should work in theory the playmaker at C with the triggerman at LW and the net front presence at RW.
Line 3 as the "shut down" line would look better with Danault at C but Evans can be a poor mans Danault.
Line 4 is the typical "energy line" that creates chances from out working the opposition and causes general chaos.

If Kotkaniemi and Evans can step up next year we should be fine or else it will be a long season next year.
Drouin:
I don't know Drouin's situation therefore I can't begin to guess what will happen with him next year. That is why I don't make plans for him until the Habs or Drouin release what his situation will be next year. For now I omit him from my plans of the future, but if we can somehow dump his contract we could use that $5.5M to obtain a top 4 LD (if Seattle takes Chiarot) or resign Danault at 3C and move Evans to the 4C spot. If we can't move Drouin's contract I would use the above lines and send Drouin to Laval and treat him the same way we did with Alzner at least that way we can save $1M in cap space. If Drouin refuses to go to Laval we could then terminate his contract unless he claim's that he can't play due to mental health issues, in that case we could send Drouin to "Robidas Island" and place him on LTIR and use his $5.5M to obtain another player (preferably resign Danault at $5.5M). We can't resign Suzuki next year if we have both Drouin and Danault under contract and I would personally prefer Danault.

Alright IMO, with what happened to him, I can’t see him come back next year or just come back at all
