To put that cap/cash into perspective. Detroit retained on Savard for around 200k cash for a fourth round pick and knew they weren’t going to hit that cap of 3 retained salaries. This falls short, real short.

goodrow is getting more on the market. cbj doesnt make that trade as domi is more valuable than those picks.

And also, just because he's interested in returning to TO on a platoon, possibly more of a backup role, doesn't mean he would sign for that low of a deal.. Bet even with the down year, and somewhat trending down last couple years he'd still likely take a pay cut, but in the neighborhood of $3m or so....

What if Goodrow wants to play for his hometown team?

I made the same type of trade with San Jose and they weren't interested because they said "they were going to use their cap space".

DET could do this, but at the TDL. There is a maximum of 3 retained salaries a team can have in a given year. This would take up 1, and given the ample cap space DET has, I don’t see them retaining salary this early for a 5th rounder. There will likely be much more valuable pieces coming DET’s way for players with higher cap hits though.

You also need to consider the repercussions of Covid and the flat cap. I feel teams would be less likely to make cap trades at the beginning of the season due to the financial repercussions. TDL cap dumps are more supportive of this in that a bulk of the salary has already been paid off, alleviating a large portion of the financial burden.

It's a hometown discount, not exactly "playing for free".

Also, saying Goodrow is a superstar is laughable.

I hope the Leafs have learned their lesson by not giving away draft picks at TDL for older non contributors.
Certainly Domi hasn't been good for two years. Leafs don't need him next season or in the future.
Of course Andersen will say "He wants to return". He has to keep his options open. Lots of other UFA goalies available this summer.
Just too many holes on the teams because of the signing of 8.5m Hamilton

Kerfoot isn't exactly a cap dump.

This ACGM post of mine from two weeks ago shows two different Canucks fans willing to pay a 3rd for Kerfoot.

Why would we give draft picks and not just sign a free agent cheaper? NO thanks . We already have centers.

That begs the question as to why draft picks are ever traded by any of the 31 teams to begin with.

Also, going cheaper usually means going for less quality.

        But to each his own.

if you dont understand sarcasm, I cant help you bud. not every player will take a massive discount to play in their hometown, esp when they arent a superstar adn have to fight for every penny

I've made several posts within the last few weeks where Goodrow signs a 1 year deal with the Leafs and you're the first person to attack it.

Also, this is not what this post is primarily about.

Hockey247 said half an hour ago that Domi is more valuable than the picks.

        That's probably a sign it's a fair trade.

Scroll up and read for yourself.

Should I believe you or him?

I find it interesting you both have the word "Toronto" written in your profiles.

        1. My point is that some people just comment on my posts just to trash them and completely ignore that similar ideas have been done before.

They also try to manufacture excuses that such ideas are impossible and will never happen again.

It doesn't matter how good those ideas are.

Whether you're one of those people, I'm not sure.

Your next comment could serve as a bellwether.

        2. Pearson has been with the Red Wings for 6 years. You'd think he would gotten a shot at 4C duties by now.

As for confusing Foligno with Savard, my point on eating salary from a division rival is still the same.

and he wont lol. if he wants to win a cup, or at least win a round, he doesn't come to toronto. go ask marleau and thornton how many rounds the leafs win in the playoffs.

        and he might lol.

If he wants to play for his hometown team and be close to his family, he comes to Toronto.

Toronto hasn't won a playoff round recently but Marleau and Thornton still signed there, so what's your point?

I merely provided a comp trade to be used as a baseline to determine your value is off. This isn’t my assessment but rather events that have happened. SJ fans wanting to use their cap in a particular fashion has no barring on Detroit’s cap.

Detroit has been loaded with expensive bottom 6 forwards and some of those contracts are now gone so Pearson most likely gets an extended look. His stats don’t show start potential in the NHL but he isn’t that. He’s a bottom 6 center hopefully. I’ve liked his progress the past 1.5 years or so.

ah yes. go from a stanley cup championship caliber team to a team that can't even win a round in the playoffs while being in the prime of your career and are hoping for a good stable contract. makes sense.

That's probably the kindest and most well-thought out comment, especially compared to what others have said here.

        I appreciate it smile
