One of the smartest front offices didnt go out of their way to acquire and extend toews thinking t hey will lose him or Girard in the XD. The draft didnt sneak up on them. Clearly they already had a plan with EJ how to navigate the XD

and even if they didnt get him to waive or buyout, they are protecting 4-4 with their Top 3Dmen.
