the fact that the kings traded kubalik for a 5th in january 2019 and then starting that fall he potted 30 goals in a short season is a bad trade that flies under the radar i feel like. I don’t think i’ve actually seen anyone talk about that, i didn’t even know about it til i just looked up his hockeydb

Idk if there's any insight on him not wanting to sign with the Kings. If so, the low pick makes sense considering the risk he was at the time

Id have to go find it, but there were plenty of reports from Kings insiders that Kubalik wouldn't sign with LA. The reasoning isn't sure, just that Blake went to him with a contract offer and he refused it. Many think it was because the offer was 2-way and he didn't want to risk playing in the AHL. Having not seen him play in North America, Blake wasn't willing to up it and was forced to recoup some assets instead of losing him for nothing in free agency. Not much that could have been done. Chicago took a swing on the guy and just happened to hit a home run, much to the chagrin of us Kings fans. But many of us reasonable ones don't blame Blake for how it turned out. Its not like he has a crystal ball.

I guess that’s fair, like I said I hadn’t heard about it, so it having a logical explanation makes sense. Although if that was really the reason, it seems kinda weird that they wouldn’t let a 24yo go back to Europe if he can’t crack the NHL, it’s not like he would get a whole lot out of the AHL at that point and teams are usually pretty good about Euro out clauses and stuff, especially for non-top tier prospects (e.g. the Sens just let Abramov go back to the KHL for the next couple years). Hindsight’s 2020 of course but unless it’s Kings policy it seems kinda weird.
