Description
So the Jets have 2 Dmen that should be kept, bar none, in Pionk and Demelo. People aren’t going to like reading this, but with 6 years and $6.25M left in his deal, the organization should leave morrissey unprotected as he hasn’t been worth that price and it would be an awfully big bet for Seattle to take him. If they did, $6.25M becomes available. If they didn’t, you’ve protected everyone. Now they won’t do this so Demelo-Pionk-Morrissey get protected. Logan Stanley becomes the available Dman they consider taking, which is fine.

With the F’s. The Jets are likely to leave one of Copp or Appleton exposed. Given Copp’s 1 year away from UFA, moving him pre-expansion draft may not be a bad idea for some assets. I’m a huge Copp fan, but arbitration players very rarely sign long term with the team that took them there. Detroit makes sense for Copp as he has Michigan ties, can see an elevated role and have space to add him to their protected list

In this scenario I would not move assets to protect Logan Stanley.

The Pairings are designed by best fit; and ice time would vary depending on game flow. Hamilton would be perfect to bring heinola up with. Samberg is the better Forbort fit with Pionk. And we know how well Demelo works with Morrissey.

Side note: Maurice was canned and Boudreaux brought in

You saw JoMo in the Edmonton series right? He played excellent and was looking his normal self from a few years ago. Yes, he may have had a few questionable seasons but what do you expect when the team lost Buff and Trouble. Give him a competent partner and some time and he will be back to dominating

Noway is Yzerman dealing two Mid 2nd round picks for Andrew Copp, That's not the kind of moves Yzerman makes. Yzerman will be bringing in high picks for teams that can't protect certain players due to the expansion draft. Not surrendering them.

Never hurts adding legitimate middle 6 NHL talent to help bring the kids in.

They have enough of that already and with expansion you aren't getting 2 2nds for this guy. Wings are going to continue the rebuild the via the draft as they have been. Good thoughts though, just doenst line up with wings timeline right now

Few things on this:

1. You’re absolutely correct on Josh Morrissey looking like himself in the Edmonton series. But 4 games doesn’t change 2 years.

2. The fact he needs a partner that’s better than him, tells you he isn’t worth the top pairing money he’s paid. Which makes it unlikely Seattle takes him for 6 years at that price tag.

3. Morrissey coming around is directly correlated with him being paired with Demelo, who most are dumping aside. Time to put some respect on amelo@2 name around here.

Not at that price, if Copp wants to come home in a year or two, Whenever he becomes a UFA. We can just sign him for free.

No ones going to pay Detroit to save a player from Weattle only for that team to lose an additional player to Seattle. That doesn’t even make sense. This would be Yzerman taking advantage of the draft to acquire a very strong middle 6 F that can help carry the play for the youth movement.

Do I see it as likely? Nope. Just an idea

Appreciate the feedback, wings are building through the draft so we are going to keep 2 2nds.

What I was saying Is we would have to protect him say over erne or someone else we already have, so wings aren't going to do this trade, per all of yzermans interviews and trades he's made

It makes sense! Admittedly haven’t been following much wings. Big Yzerman fan as a GM, you guys are going to be in good shape. Genuinely looked at this as a Detroit Win for you guys tbh

I love what he's doing. As long as we can remain patient and keep up without rushing anything like the leafs did, we are going to be so good. We really need a 1C badly. I hope we can get wright next year, power or wahlstadt this year to solidy the future

I think can’t get over just how much he got for Mantha. I’m a huge Vrana fan myself, and would take him heads up. Never mind the icing on the cake that came with it.

You’re asking for more compensation that a bonafide top pairing defensemen (Toews) got last offseason. Does Winnipeg even protect Copp over Appleton in the ED?

To be fair, Toews was pretty underrated. As mentioned above, I was just throwing this out there as a concept.

Copp likely gets protected over Appleton. Realistically he’s better than both Lowry and Appleton

Devon Toews has been a known commodity for a couple years before the trade. Lowry probably doesn’t sign that extension without protections in place though. So it comes down to Appleton & Copp. Some Jet fans have said Copp isn’t happy in Winnipeg so it doesn’t make a ton of sense to pay a premium for a player having a career year that wants out from a Detroit perspective.

Trust me, I know re: Toews. He was someone I was hoping Winnipeg would jump all over. 2 2nds in that context for copp is an overpay on my part.

Yeah the org values Lowry heavily. He’ll be protected. They should’ve waited on that contract.

Copp is a huge part of this teams forward core. He wasn’t happy being taken to arbitration and always seeing a diminished role whenever he gets bounced from the top 6 when he’s play well. He’s a strong player. I’d keep him myself and wouldve prioritized him over lowry.

At a lower price, I do think this is the type of situation Yzerman should be extracting a good player from. He’d do wonders for the youth there.

Fabbri for Jacob del a rose? This is the type of trades yzerman makes and the only reason why I expect bertuzzi to go for a mantha type deal. I'm with you, I would have done mantha 1 for 1 with vrana, but unreal what he got ontop

$19 million on the RHD. That is good management.

On the other hand trading Copp for assets and replacing Maurice has my stamp of approval.

I’ve been an advocate for Detroit to acquire Copp if the price is right. Two seconds is too rich for me.

The Jets left handed depth far outweighed the right side. Protecting a 23 year old... 3rd pairing Dman over a top 4 RHD signed cheap for years to come would be Peter Chiarelli level of mismanagement

Very good management. You’re far too focused on the handedness of a position rather than total impact and value
