No from Montreal, Maybe if it was 1 for 1 but I doubt we even do that as Dermott is not much of an upgrade over Kulak

I add a 3rd and Olofsson 'cause I think Bergevin will go at it and Dermott isn't on the market (I think)
+ MTL and TOR are in the same division, so kinda hard making trade against a direct rival

My point is there is no reason to overpay for a guy who is not an upgrade on anything we already have. We have Kulak already and he is bigger and more sound defensively than Dermott, while putting up similar numbers. This is just a sideways move.

Dermott is one inch shorter and 13lbs heavier than Kulak. He also ranks in the 93rd percentile in xGA/60 compared to Kulak's 53rd (Dermott faces more high end competition). None of this is to say they should make that trade, but the 'bigger and more sound defensively' argument was kind of feeble.

I’m asking, but why does dermott play higher competition? He’s on third pair.

Dermott is one of the best 3rd pair defenders in the league. Kulak sucks. This trade is giving the Leafs nothing for a good player. Bad trade.

Hint... it’s because he’s not that good

What does third pair actually mean? You think Reilly is a "first" pair Dman when he rarely plays on PK? Reilly has a lot of points and plays the exclusive LHD on the PP, but that does make him a 1st pair?
Leafs certainly aren't trading a top 6 Dman for an more expensive winger that they don't need. Not saying the trade value isn't fair, but certainly not a fit for the Leafs.

I don’t actually think either are special or much more then 5th or 6th guy.

I just wondering if there was more of a reason, like Toronto plays him and bogosian in more of a shut down role, and are really an expanded third pairing. Not your average third pairing. Not just that kulak sucks, Because kulak when is stuck with petry actually gets on vs top two lines of the opponent for most the game.

I understand kulak plays either shelter minutes with Romanov or plays bigger minutes but then it is insulated by having Petry as his partner.

Okay, this is why I’m asking. Montreal uses Weber and Petry pairings vs the top two line for most the game or all the game if they can. Third pairing match ups down the line up, not often vs the top two lines. That’s all I’m asking. I’m not trying to start an argument.

Would have guess Toronto would have said Riley a top line pairing D.

I think too many so called sports fans get caught up in the silly numbers game. It's kinda tough to pair match especially on the road. Since I know the Leafs the best, an example was last season.
People won't believe when I say I though Tyson Barrie was the Leafs worse Dman. He played almost all the RHD on the PP, but was never used on the PK. And in tight games, Holl and Ceci were the mainstays for defensive situations. So while Ceci was castrated on this site for being a terrible Dman, and many folks don't appreciate Holl.....Barrie (and often Reilly) played "easy" minutes.

It was an observation, is Kulak bigger? Yes 2 inches. Fact! is Kulak better defensively? Yes you proved it, Dermott is 93rd, Kulak 53! You glossed over the fact that I said it was a lateral move though which to me suggests that you know Montreal would lose the trade as well, which i all the more reason not to like the proposal.

It's percentile. Higher is better.

Also, I think I was pretty clear in my comment that I wasn't suggesting MTL should do the trade.

Man leaf fans are the worse. Simple question does dermott play in tougher match ups then I am aware of from what I have seen that’s not the case, then I wasn’t going to do a ton of research just hoping some could say yes or kinda or not really. But still don’t know. Wasn’t just trying to start an argument or get the “so called sports fan” earlier post I example my question and said I used stand different roles but yet we choose to avoid the question and be little.

To answer you question. At LHD, I would say Muzzin plays the tougher minutes. Dermot and Holl about the same. Gee, I wasn't trying to start an argument.
