I think it has to do with his low cap hit and overpriced as at the deadline.

- He is worth more to ARZ than the Leafs
- I think the hope and assumption is that the 1st given to Arz will be late and the 1st rounder received back will be mid-late.

Try to not take it so literally.. If you can get more back for Garland EVEN BETTER.
The point is you can trade some significant assets for Garland (potentially even more than in this scenario) and recoup some of those assets after the season is over.

He is essentially a rental RFA. Thats the idea here. Play with the exact details however you want

As I said^... You can adjust the trade in your own head. The idea is an RFA rental and recouping assets after the season. Even if you sell at a loss, its about the cost of a rental of Garlands calibre anyway
