Crosby and Malkin will lead pittsburgh to the playoffs. While good rangers just are not there yet.

Maybe but their bottom 6 is very, very underwhelming not unlike the Rangers. Rangers have better goalies, Pittsburgh has better defense. Last year, Zib+Panarin>Crosby+Malkin and with potential X-factor Lafrenière coming in, I'll take the Rangers. But you never know.

Can one of you habs fans explain how Montreal is not exactly the same as Calgary but without elite forwards?

Zib and Panarin were not better than Malkin and Crosby last year

Better depth, defense, and a better backup?

Zib led the NHL in G/PG and Panarin was a Hart nominee. They were pretty clearly better.

Is their offensive depth better? I really dont see it. Flames defense is at least as good too, backup is pretty negligible, even then not a big difference between the 2

Malkin had the best P/60 of the 4 and Pittsburgh had the worst injury issues in the league last year. With Guentzel back and a more complete top 6 Malkin and Crosby should easily be better than Zibanijad and probably Panarin too

That and rangers goalies really were not much better

Jarry had a 2.43gaa and a 0.921 SV in 33 games still surprised they didnt play him in the play-in cause he probs would have led Pittsburgh past the habs. As for the backup when Desmith played back in 2018-2019 he had a 2.75gaa and a 0.916 in 33 games. Honestly I was shocked nobody claimed him back in 2019-2020 off waivers lul.

In comparison Shesterkin in 12gp he has a 2.52gaa and a 0.932 but when u go through those 12 games he did well due to facing non-contenders but against strong teams there were issues.

Georgiev 3.01gaa and a 0.910 sv in 34 games last season and was wildely inconsistent especially when Lundqvist and shesterkin were out.

so rangers goaltending aint better either. Shesterkin is still unproven and georgiev has consistency issues.

I have no idea why people think the Rangers will be good this year. Worst defense in the division and they made zero improvements.

Only reason people think it is they got Panarin, Kreider, Zbanijad, Buchnevich and the newly drafted Lafreniere on offense with Lindgren with Fox on defense and 2 young goalies with potential. But yeah with little defensive improvement and need a top 4 LD and an unproven starting goaltender no idea. Plus they got Washington, Pittsburgh, Philidelphia, Boston and the islanders to deal with. They aint making it this year unless two of the 5 get a visit from the injury fairy

Zibanijad had an insane shooting percentage last year too. I can’t see him replicate his season he had last year.

Bottom 6 wingers are far better for Habs, but I'd rather have Backlund/Bennett over KK/Evans. Top 4 D is roughly the same but Kulak/Romanov promises to be superior to Valimaki/Nesterov. Jake Allen also had a .935 and had to take over for Binnington in the playoffs so I would say that puts him in a league above Rittich.

I'm also not saying Crosby/Malkin won't be worse this year, but I'm just saying that there's a world where the Rangers matches the star power Pittsburgh has.

Calgary's current bottom 6 is Mangiapane, Backlund, Bennett, Lucic, Nordstrom then 1 of Simon/Leivo. Thats really solid depth wise.
3rd pair wise Valimaki and Romanov are a wash, then you are comparing the #6 of Kulak and and Nesterov. That seems like such an irrelevant difference, especially since Nesterov had a strong camp but hasnt played in the NHL in 2 years (hard to judge).
As for goalie Rittich was at the allstar game last year and was the starter for Calgary. As a backup he should be much more consistent than before.

Overall the slight advantages Montreal may have over Calgary the Flames more than make up for with their superstar wingers.

As for PIT and NYR, the Pens played without Guentzel most of the year. I'm personally taking Crosby + Malkin + Guentzel over Panarin + Zibanejad + Lafreniere this year 9/10 times and I generally dislike the Pens
