this literally solves no issues for the Leafs. It makes them worse now and the futures fill no holes in the system.

amazing how this site has boiled Marner down to "an over paid forward" like he isnt a top winger in the league and incredibly valuable

Not for 11M dollars he isn't. He is so sick and Amazing there is no doubt about that, but he's not worth 11M a year. We have raymond who is the same player with a better shot on an elc, no reason to blow up our cap space, lose a top 3/6 forward in zadina and a chance at shane wright in 2022. It's an absolute pass on the wings side

Raymond is a great prospect, but the chances of him being Marner are very slim. Very very few players become Marner so saying Raymond is "the same player" is, well, hopeful to say the least.
I mean, you can argue that it isnt a good move for the Wings for lots of reasons but simply writing Marner off as "an over paid player" because he makes like a million bucks too much a year is doing him a hell of a disservice.

I would say Raymond has a very good chance of being Marner 2.0, they are extremely similar. That doesn't mean he will but the potential is definitely there and the chances aren't "slim" like you say. I would give it a 60/40 split. 60% chance he reaches Marner level (80-100p playmaking 2-way player), 40% he falls short.

I think he's overpaid by 2M bucks personally and there is no reason for the wings to make this trade. Shane wright is worth it alone not making this deal as well as the cap space, the extra money and giving up zadina. The overpaid player is part of the conversation regardless and wasn't the main or only reason I said wings pass, but it does contribute to the overall evaluation of the deal. I should have worded it better and not made it seem so negative, that part is true.

Zadina + chance at shane wright + raymond becoming a marner type for a player whose really good but overpaid by about 2M is not really the direction the wings are wanting to go. Can't see them taking on 11M a year for marner at this time.

guys, we're talking about marner as if he's retired. The kid is 22, just turned 23 in the off season. Remember when everybody laughed at Draisaitl's contract, giving 8.5 million to a 60-70 point player? Now everybody is laughing at the leafs for giving $11m to a 94 point player. Just saying, he scored at a 98 point pace under keefe (AT 22!!!) . With him playing 25 minutes a night alongside increasingly an increasingly better matthews/nylander, entering his prime he could easily become a top 5 winger in years to come.

hard to say a prospect will just be that. Best case scenario a prospect turns into a player like marner, that's hardly a certainty

and if you wanna go laugh at the top 5 winger comment, please, time travel to 2017 and say that the overpaid 23 year old who has a couple 50-70 point seasons is gonna win the art ross and the hart trophy and score more than mcdavid. players can grow and hit another level as they enter their prime, especially top end talent - the wingers marner is competing with in the league are all much older than him

I never said Marner is bad, he will very likely have at least one 100 point season. I just think Raymond is of a similar caliber. However prospects are still prospects and dont always pan out

I never said he was bad either, I was just saying I wouldn't have given him more than 9M, especially now that we know about flat caps. I also never said raymond will pan out 100%, I'm just saying the way we are rebuilding raymond is close to the type of player marner is for 10M less and fits our rebuild and cap space better. Zadina also looks to be a 25+ top 6 goal scoring winger. Then add ontop of it the chance to draft shane wright and it's just not worth it for those assets for marner

I like marner a ton but giving up those assets for 1 guy makes no sense for a rebuilding team. We need the quantity to bring in players. I'd love to add marner but it's just a bad fit.

Probelm is not if Marner is great, it is the Wings do not have the assets to expend to trade for him, without hurting the future and the rebuild.

Detroit declines, Zadina isn't going anywhere and rebuilding teams don't surrender high quality picks. Especially seeing that we're in position to nab Shane Wright.
