Description
Sets us up in 2 years with a ton o draft picks... and loads of cap space for when we are actually ready to invest in some premium UFA's for 2022 season. Aguably... with Fleury, Johnson, Kerfoot and defensive center in sutter we are already a better team that the kids can learn from. Plenty of (useful) guys like Fillipula to be traded for 5-7th rounders to reduce numbers too.

lol, Leafs arnt paying you picks to take on Kerfoot and Holl. They just moved Johnsson who was a very comparable contract to Kerfoot, if anything Kerfoot is more valuable as he plays center too, without having to give up anything.

Maybe 1 deal like this but not 3 or 4. I dont think they're gonna spend the cap in such an uncertain time.

Kerfoot and Holl both pretty much overpaid and overvalued by Leafs nation. It costs picks to move contracts like these.

agreed... but would be nice to have some extra high end picks from the cap strapped teams.

Except you ignored the example I provided of a contract similar to Kerfoots but for a less valuable player in Johnsson being moved and even with an asset coming back. Clearly your opinion of what it costs to move contracts like these is wrong or at the very least without evidence. And when I can show with an example of how wrong you are on needing to pay to move a contract like Kerfoots, you can imagine how wrong you are in needing a 1st round pick to move them.

Part of this issue is having every acgm pack them both in trades to teams who either can’t afford it or pulling a quantity for quality trade. There’s only a few teams that are in the market for those guys.... so many people are interpreting that as a cap dump.

And you can understand that it is an issue taking ACGMs as any kind of indicator of value compared to real NHL examples we have at our disposal.

Yup! Those few teams would pay in low picks for each player

Comparing what provide Kerfoot & Holl provide to other similar $ contracts in the league actually leaves them a bit undervalued if anything all told

Kerf 40 point pace yearly and good two way play
Holl 20 point pace or so and good two way play

Kerfoot similar contracts: Eller, Dzingel, Compher
Holl similar contracts: Browiecki, Pateryn, Johns

Both perform similarly or better than the others

To suggest it'll cost picks to move them is absurd

Why would the Canucks retain on Eriksson and why would Detroit want them too?

Eriksson is an anchor of a contract especially for a marginal 4th liner, so retaining some of it makes it possible for a trade. At minimum he will cost a first, but also taking on Sutter's contract in this hypothetical deal so it's going to cost Canucks something?? Maybe if no retention, throw in Podkolzin?

Are you daft? You think Podkolzin is worth 3 million in retained cap hit?

Canucks have a cap hell situation. In no particular order, Erikkson, Sutter, Beagle, Roussel, Benn, Myers. Plus still paying out on Luongo and Spooner. If they want to win in their window it'll take sacrifcing the future a bit. Can't keep signing 3rd and 4th liners to top line $$. They need to move 1 or 2 of these guys and they will need to massively retain OR give up a premium prospect... It sucks but that's the way it is and the low spending teams are in a buyers market. The only other team in as bad shape as Vancouver is the Lightning but they at least have a cup... and maybe the Leafs but thats due to chronic mismanagement just like Vancouver.

Yzerman still won't call the Staal trade a cap dump getting him to do more I don't know. But a player player with a season or two left I'm down with that.

Staal was the best of both can still play a position of need and got a pick.

All of the money will be off the books in two seasons when our stars are what 24 and 23? And our new goalie has hopefully cemented a starting role. Our window isn't even open, it would be pure stupidity to trade a blue chip prospect to save 3 mil in cap space for two seasons. Who would we get with that money? We have our star core in place so now we need to shed bad contracts yes, but we also need to get production from entry level deals, which means keeping our picks and prospects, unless a special opportunity arises. We're not in cap hell and our window isn't open. We can afford to be patient for a couple yrs.

You're right it is the best of both and I'm not saying that it isn't. But Yzerman's refusal to say it's a cap dump and when asked if there will be more trades like that he gives a very general answer or moves a long to the next question. Is he saying that because he is going to take more on or is he saying there will be no more trades like that? I mentioned it because I'm just trying to gain a little insight well we will know soon enough what he meant.

I just think that they arent going to spend the cap. They just built the new arena and now there are no fans and you know the revenues are way down. We're lucky the ownership loves the team as much as we do but spending another 10 or 15 million on players I dont think they do it.

If these cap dump deals with high end picks attached to them were available I am sure Yzerman would have taken them already. Teams are likely waiting it out and hoping the prices drop to move bad contracts. I can see things heating up in December when teams are getting ready for camps.
