At best and this is a stretch you would get hoglander, but that first would def drop down to a 2nd

that 1st has less value in a weak draft class and VAN is gonna be good i think so it'll be in the low-mid 20s

rather have 1 of the 2 players than that 1st and you can keep Lind and Rafferty, we can take 1 of the sh*t contracts

Structure it around a "Pacioretty to VGK" type deal for Gallagher.

Hoglander + 2nd + Tatar type guy (pre-MTL value of course) and maybe Habs bite if they can't extend Gally.

Thats more reasonable then some of the suggestions i've seen from some MTL fans i could see a deal like a 1st and a 3rd plus a b propsect

They'd have to clear out ~4 mil in cap to fit the deal. It would be nice to get draft picks instead of trading them all away....

No they don't you don't get it Gallagher is 6th in the league in 5 on 5 goals over the past 3 seasons. He is the engine that drives the Habs offense. It would be like Vancouver giving up Horvat for Yelonen + 2nd + Poehling. It's not going to happen! IF and this is a HUGE IF Gallagher gets put on the market the Habs get to set the price at whatever they want cause they do NOT have to move him. The Habs would want 1st in 22 + Podkolzin + Beosser + either a 2nd or Hoglander for Gallagher extended. Withought an extention your looking at 2022 1st + Podkolzin

Yeah assuming a RHD got shipped out we could do it. Our draft capital got demolished by Botts. Sutter is also a good penalty killer apparently so I'll take it.

Habs probably turned down a 1st + 3rd + b prospect (Woo?), not because of value, but because if Gally leaves, Habs would be looking for a short term replacement + a prospect who is closer to making the NHL, hence the "Patches to VGK" type deal. A 1st + 3rd + b prospect is too long term in the Habs plans.

but again, if Habs can re-sign Gallagher, he's just simply off the market. But while Bergevin is negotiating, only thing that makes me budge from VAN (that's not currently on their roster) is Podkolzin.

But if things really do start to go south during negotiations, and Benning holds strong on keeping Podkolzin (you never know), than yeah, a Hoglander + 2nd + Tatar type guy is what would seal the deal for me with VAN.
The market for someone like Gallagher will be huge, even as a rental. $3.75mil 30goals spark plug players can be counted on 1 hand in the NHL

If I’m VAN I’m not trading a 1st for a player who is a UFA in one years time, even if he is from the area and may want to resign.
I’m not saying Gallagher isn't worth a first, he’s a good player, but here’s my reasons VAN shouldn’t pay that cost.

- VAN doesn’t have the cap space now or when Gallagher wants a raise after next season.
- VAN is not yet a contender, so paying a 1st for someone you may not be able to resign is a big gamble.
- VAN did not have a first or second this year and does not have a 3rd next year. They still need more prospects coming in on ECL’s, especially after Petterson and Hughes are extended next year.

ok a lot to unpack here. 1st let's agree Habs first priority is to re-sign Gally, so this is all conjecture right now. 2nd is literally no one, ever, will pay that price for Gally, no matter how rare he is lol

the whole point of this "make believe" situation is that MTL can't re-sign Gally. 100% that news won't be kept a secret. So realistically speaking, teams won't send over the earth and the moon for him, if they can just wait till free agency to sign him. DON'T GET ME WRONG though, teams will do a bidding war for someone like him if he's available through trade, so I firmly believe Habs can still get a premium for Gallagher. but a "Patches to VGK" type deal is a lot more realistic expectation. Habs could still hope for that top of the line prospect (like Podkolzin), it's definitely not unrealistic, but don't get your hopes up.

1. I agree that Gally will 99% be re-signed by the Habs and probably at something like 6-7 Mil for 7 or 8 years with a full NMC. 2. I outlined that as a rental the asking price is likely Podkolzin + 2022 1st. Beyond that IF it was a for a SIGNED Gallagher the price would skyrocket as there would be no reason to make the trade from the Habs standpoint. Only then would they as for Hoglander or a 2nd + Boesser, Does that mean that will be the final price? No, it would just be the asking price from the Habs. Most likely the Canucks would not want to give up 2 very good prospects, a top 6 forward and a 1st but they would have to give up something close to that to entice Montreal to trade Gallagher in a sign and trade situation.

I think you underestimate the value in a healthy draft capital. G improvements aren't halted with this move.

3rd & 4th round picks rarely turn out to be anything more than depth players at best
And depth players are easily attainable

We have 13.6mil in Cap room
Reinhart will take up at least 6mil
Olofsson is at least 3m

That gives us less than $5mil
And that’s if those guys sign at those prices
Might cost more

Plus Ullmark & maybe Pilut

And can we trade Hutton? Or do we have to bury him?

Bringing in a $4mil guy to play 4th line & PK isn’t smart with the Cap space we have left

Hutton has a $916K BO. Sabres are going to move a RHD which will save $3-5M depending on who they move. Those picks are ammunition. You could do more than just draft low ceiling players.

I’d we trade a RH defenseman,
then we should sign (or trade for) a top4 LH guy

Sutter isn’t good
It’s wasted cap space

3rd & 4th round picks RARELY work out
Just take a look
