I don't think the Wings got enough for taking Staal, cap space is at a major premium and Yzerman basically gave a lot away for only a 2nd that might amount to something in 4 years if it ever does, he really helped out an Eastern Conference rival that's trending towards being a powerhouse for the next decade, not impressed by Stevie Y with this move.

I didn’t mind the move. TOR had to Give up a 1st to get rid of 6M. So a 2nd rounder for taking on less than that seems about right.

What you're missing is that Yzerman probably wanted Staal in the lineup as a mentor. He's not just a buyout (a la Marleau)

I get that but there's so many other options for having a mentor/veteran presence, could've signed Hainsey or someone similar to a one year deal.

What I think many are missing is how little cap space there is in the league, there's very few teams with cap space and even the teams that appear to have some don't have much when you factor in their RFA'S they have to sign and other lineup spots that need to be filled like signing a backup goalie, filling certain positional needs, getting to a 23 man roster, etc.

Cap space is at a premium, it should've cost more then a 2021 2nd to dump $5.7M, seriously Yzerman really helped the Rangers out here, can't believe how easy NY got off with this.
