LOL that Oiler trade is terrible. JP cost is a first and prospect according to Holland, and Johnsson anyone can have for a 3rd. So there is a big difference

Just sign him in FA, like why do you need rights? He's an Unrestricted Free Agent. Toronto would even worry about it.

Acquiring APs rights doesn't get you an 8 year deal, Needs to be a sign and trade offer for 8 years. Only the Blues can offer him 8 years.

Why would anyone want to sign a 30 year old to an 8 year deal? Crazy

This is correct. The problem is that most of the media doesn't seem to understand this, so people are going to keep believing that acquiring his rights is enough.

I don't see any realistic scenario where the Blues trade the rights of Pietrangelo, and the asset cost of a sign-and-trade would not be worth it to bring the cap hit down by $1m-$1.25m compared to just signing him to a seven year deal in UFA. I doubt the Leafs would offer a second for his rights and the Blues sure as **** wouldn't accept.

Lebrun has been pitching that idea for years, it has yet too happen. The only time I see it ever being a legit possibility is when another Tavares level 27 yo hits UFA.

7 years for AP won't look pretty near the end, adding 1 more yr would be buy-out territory by the end.

He'll easily get 7 but yeah that 8th year would be crazy and is pushing it.

Leafs likely don't have a problem with going 8 years, might even bring the annual cap hit down a bit (big maybe). Sure as **** not giving a first or second round pick for the opportunity though.

Players rights are no more then either a 4th or 5th round pick, LeBrun is delusional if he thinks it's going to take a 1st or 2nd for any players UFA rights. If AP is bent on going home to Toronto then you don't need to give up rights for that player. Would be no different with Detroit and Krug if he's 100% committed on coming home we just sign him on October the 9th.

I agree that they don't have to give up anything to sign him. But I am intrigued by the idea of trying to get him the extra year to potentially bring down his annual cap hit. It's a long shot, but it would be nice.

They want to sign him before any teams can ( before free agency on oct. 9 )

And that could only be done through a sign and trade, For example Armstrong and Pietrangelo and his agent agree to be dealt to Toronto for lets say 8 x 8 and then Dumas gives Armstrong lets say Alexander Kerfoot+Toronto's 2020 2nd round pick to finalize the deal. Dubas gives up a little something of value for that 8th year perhaps that's what LeBrun is suggesting here.

I'm sure St. Louis would love to acquire a middle 6 C and a 2nd round pick for literally nothing. Dubas would take some serious heat from this city if he did that.
