Retooling for the expansion draft and beyond

Description
Roster built in the perspective of being competitive as soon as 2020-2021, all the while keeping cap flexibility for the « flat cap era » with 33M available in the 2021 offseason, more than enough to give reasonable raises to Danault, Gallagher and Petry and bridge contracts to Suzuki, Kotkaniemi, Romanov and Primeau. Caufield and Norlinder should hopefully integrate the lineup by 2022, giving the Habs 2 impactful players on ELC to make Edmunston/Byron expandable for futures.

I swear to God, if we send a 1st round pick in any draft for Max Domi, I'm going to freak out.

Make the pick a top 10 protected 1st if domi scores 50 points, otherwise it’s a 2nd. I’m hesitant to move a first but this would be worthwhile. OP is close to value for MN.

If wild tend to keep this era of mediocrity going, it’s a fair trade. Because it doesn’t look like they’re blowing anything up

Maybe that’s what YOUD give. But that doesn’t reflect his market value. Pits 2021 first and Greenway should be fair

Value is close

I think Poehling carries a bit more value than that. I'd do 3rd + Poehling. Not sure if habs give up on him yet tho. If they're targeting Anderson and that would be the price, MTL can lose a prospect at center.

I also don't think Bergevin would want future assets for Domi. I'd do it if Domi commands +6m tho

Good post

Not terrible value for Columbus, but I don't think it tempts Jarmo to do the deal. Poehling needs to show a little more in the pros to command the value this trade assumes he has. Kudos on a fair contract for Anderson, though.

To comment/answer a few queries:

- Anderson being a RFA, an offer sheet under 4M/year would cost a 2nd round pick. By offering a (late) 2nd and Poehling, I think Columbus just might take the bait, especially if they want to keep Dubois long term. I guess however that Montreal could add one of its numerous mid-round pick in 2020 to grease the wheels if Columbus’ GM insists.

- As for the Domi trade, I think the Habs can afford to concentrate on obtaining a 1st round pick as the main return for him if Anderson can be added to the lineup this offseason (or if Caufield breaks out sooner than expected). Considering that Minnedita cruelly lacks depth at center and has PIT’s 1st rounder as well as its own pick in 2021, I think the proposed deal’s a win-win. As for the addition of Greenway, Domi is worth more than the potential of PIT’s 1st (2021), hence a tangible short term asset to buff up Montreal’s size on the wing. I guess however that Montreal could also add one of its numerous mid-round pick in 2020 to grease the wheels if Bill Guerin insists.

As I said above, I don't think the value is terrible. But our cap situation is easier than it appears; Dubinsky will be on LTIR and his contract is 100% insured (so no cash cost), trading Savard and/or Murray would save us more than $4M, and Wennberg's buyout is crazy affordable and would save us $4.5M this year alone.
