Marner is better offensively but not by much, marner only has 50 more points and tkachuk has played less games. Tkachuk draws the most penalties in the league, tkachuk is a leader, tkachuk plays good defense and tkachuk is very physical and tkachuk will fight. So tell me how marner is even close to tkachuk, also tkachuk has 4 mil less cap hit
Again if you read the above, you'll see the argument is that his cap hit is irrelevant as its cash, and Marner is likely to be paid less cash after they both get their signing bonuses over the next 5 years.
In regards to drawing penalties, that tends to not be a skill that lasts all that long, as ref's get tired of you. Kadri was a leader in that for about 3 years straight, now he can't get a penalty to save his life, as the ref's don't trust him.
In regards to offense in the last two years Marner has 161 points in 141 gp, to Tkachuk's 138 points in 149 gp or in their careers, Tkchauk has 235 points in 293 GP to Marner's 291 pts in 300 GP.
While its technically almost true that , "marner only has 50 more points and tkachuk has played less games", in actuality Marner has 53 more points, but more importantly the "less games" is 7 games. 300 GP compared to 293 GP.
Look they're both super talented players, and Marner is actually good defensively (he was actually voted 14th in Selke votes last season (
https://www.hockey-reference.com/awards/voting-2019.html#selke)), you can be good defensively without being physical (the greatest defensive player of this generation, Nik Lidstrom, was not particularly physical)), but they are different.
I only made this thread as it was suggested (surprisingly to me) by TSN that Calgary was on a budget and thus would care more about cash than cap
