And we’re back to square one with the goalies. Not only that they’re so bad that the leafs are now in last place

That goalie tandem seems painful.

Leafs will never be successful with that.

Also injuries will f*ck this team since you have only one reserve player.

people overrate goalies tremendously on here.

you probably need to do better than this tandem, but not by that much with the talent in front of them.

Agree this team misses the playoffs and it isn’t close, TO needs a upgrade on 2 right shot D you can’t tie half your cap up in 4 guys

I think Petro alone is sufficient.

It's a long-shot, but I'd roll the D pairs as such:
Sandin-Pietrangelo
Rielly-Lehtonen
Muzzin-Holl/Dermott

That essentially gives the 2 pairs that are very able with puckmoving and a shutdown pair. I wouldn't bother pairing Sandin-Lehtonen together because they're both inexperienced in their own right and likely need help, so giving them elite pairs could do wonders for them.

The handed-ness of the player doesn't matter that much. I mean just look at VGK for instance, Whitecloud is the only RHD of that team. The quality of the D is more important.

The reality though is that Leafs can't sustain the team with spending half of their cap to keep up their top forward core, meaning that either Nylander or Marner should be moved in my opinion.

Got news for you, You're not winning no cup with that goalie tandem. Doubt Calgary has any interest in Andersen they will be big players on Jacob Markstrom if he hits free agency.

Why would the Leafs want/have to pay 1m more than Pietrangelo is going to receive from any other team?
Agree with JustaBoss, the "handiness" of players is so overblown. And especially on CapFriendly it's an obsession by many that the Leafs and the Leafs only need three or four NHL competent RHD.

a career backup and an old probably worst goalie in the league? yeah they need to do significantly better than that. An allstar team couldnt make the playoffs with that tandem

So you see where I acknowledge that this tandem probably doesn't work, yet you plow through with your comment anyways. Happy Monday.

Did you watch Vegas in the playoffs when they got stuck in their end it was because they had 2 LD on the ice couldn’t dump or transition the puck effectively plus teams dump the puck in on the weak side leading to them getting hemmed in on the forecheck D on their backhand can’t transition the puck effectively in today’s game do to the pace.

The people that reply to these things are clueless. This is probably the most realistic way the Leafs end up with him, though I think reports of his $9mil price tag are overblown, I could see a $7.5mil deal getting done if the term/signing bonus is right. Perhaps there's a more reliable goaltender out there to re-allocate the resources to if any discount from that number is found. Every team needs 2-4 NHL competent RHD..........

i was emphasising just how bad the tandem would be. "you probably need a better tandem" doesnt even come close. Especially since you used the word probably instead of certainly or definitely.
yep, plowed right through there

I did watch the Stars series as I'm a Stars fan, but I don't really think that the lack of RHDs would've have bigger effect regarding the results of that series.

Maybe in some situatuons that disadvantage played some part in their eventual loss, but overall I don't think the effects are that high...

The biggest problem for Vegas in that series was they couldn’t score they almost lost to Vancouver for the same thing in both series they had great scoring chances and put puck into areas that were stoppable hard to score when you hit the goalie in the crest every time not taking anything away from the goalies they were great
The other thing it’s had to keep a strong forecheck when you have a D on his wrong side and having to keep every puck in on his backhand really limits to what he can do offensively other then just pushing the puck back up the wall your also inclined to take more penalties when you defend on your wrong side as it takes your stick out of the play and you get beat down the wall and your chasing

There is a loophole in the cba. If a team has to start a game with 19 players they are then allowed to call up players with under 1m cap hit (I believe may be 925k) that do not apply to the cap.

I believe this might have been the plan last season if we didn’t have so many injuries.

I know it seems sketchy but I’m willing to bet Pridham has brought this up to dubas.

Smh if that's a thing I'll say f*ck the CBA and the NHL altogether.

They make it way too easy to deal with the cap..

From the cba...

Quoting: CBA
unable to sign and/or Recall a Player with an Averaged Amount equal to the Minimum Paragraph 1 NHL Salary plus $100,000 under the Bona Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception; (iv) as a result of such Player being unfit or unable to play or suspended and the Club having Payroll Room less than the sum of the Minimum Paragraph 1 NHL Salary and $100,000, the Club has fewer than eighteen (18) skaters and two (2) goalies ("18 and 2") on its Playing Roster (pursuant to Section 16.4(c)); and (v) the Club played its previous game with fewer than 18 and 2 (a "Roster Emergency"), then such Club may, beginning with the second game and continuing with all subsequent games and without any charge to the Club's Averaged Club Salary for the duration of such Roster Emergency, add to its Playing Roster the requisite number of "emergency replacement" Player(s), provided, however, that (i) each such Player may not have an Averaged Amount that is more than the then-applicable Minimum Paragraph 1 NHL Salary plus $100,000 (e.g., $625,000 in 2012-13); and (ii) each such Player may only remain on that Club's Active Roster during the period of the "Roster Emergency."
(i) The Paragraph 1 NHL Salary and Bonus of any Player added to the Playing Roster pursuant to this Section shall be included in the Players' Share.
(ii) No Club shall be limited in the number of times it may invoke the Roster Emergency Exception in any League Year, provided that the Exception is at all times invoked in full compliance with this Section 50.10(e).

So I believe any player called up has to be 850k or less.

wow lots of action on this agm. Just for the record i made this to show that they could fit Pietrangelo under the cap... i dont necessarily want this to happen. i have no clue what will happen but i love how people jump in right away and say this team would never do that etc. I bet if there was an agm made prior to the Kapanen pittsburgh trade pens fans would say "pittsburgh declines'' etc.

I mean as a "roster emergency" I kinda get the point to it, but if it gets actually used as a loophole used to get a "19-player team" with one player being constantly out of the cap count it kinda ruins the point of it.

Certainly hoping that's not the case.

There is nothing to stop a team. This rule doesn’t allow you to go wildly over the cap. It does however let you push your 20 man roster right to it.

Would a team try this? Who knows. Can they? Certainly. If any team were to try it I can only assume it would be the team that hired the guy that wrote it.

Guess if TOR (or frankly any team) signs a couple of league minimum UFAs, then we might be in for a rude awakening...
