Realistically what the Jets will do

Description
The Jets have two main needs heading into this offseason. They need a 2C and a Top 4 D. Cody Eakin appeared to gel with Patrik Laine and Nikolaj Ehlers during the brief 8 game stretch before the Coronavirus shutdown, so I think Eakin resigns with the Jets with a short-term deal to see his worth. The Jets also do a good job signing all of their pending UFA depth players, assigning most of them to the AHL. Another familiar face from the trade deadline that the Jets resign is Dylan DeMelo. He played good on a pair with Morrissey and they bring him back on a modest 2 year deal. They take a run at a free agent like Travis Hamonic, giving him a 2 year deal to fill a Top 4 D spot before Heinola and Samberg are ready. With the lineup set and 3.64M in extra cap space, the Jets decide to give Patrik Laine an extension, giving him an 8 x 8 to solidify his role as one of the Jets' best wingers.

Eakin was good in that 8 game stretch, but he was brutal in the Playoffs. I doubt the jets resign him. They probably go make a move for someone else with that extra cap space

Also not enough for demelo imo

Unfortunately with Chevy as our gm this is likely what happens, but imo they’ll give copp the chance at 2C over eakin, he likely won’t be resigned unless it’s like 1x1.5. Chevy is super patient and won’t go out and make a big splash so it’s likely this is right. It sucks but that’s just the way it is. Also, Laine isn’t taking 8x8, if he does I’d cry with tears of joy LOL that’s a steal. I’m fine with 8x9.5 or 7x9. DeMelo likely gets 2.5 on a 2 year deal. I think he did a fairly good job with accurately predicting the offseason. Hamonic likely isn’t a 1RD but it seems accurate as to what Chevy would do lol.

This could very well be what happens and factoring in how uneventful Chevy's offseasons typically have been this seems like what Chevy would do.

Think it might be wishful thinking about Laine signing $8M×8, there's enough rumors now from credible sources that makes me think he'll be a goner sooner then later and it's probably cause he's unhappy with his usage. Hope Laine remains a Jet for a very long time but that doesn't seem likely at this point... frown

Yeah, but the team as a whole was brutal. Laine and Scheifele were out, so you can't really do much. I'm even surprised they won a game.

Mostly I used Hamonic as a filler for Heinola and Samberg while they develop, hence the 2 year term

Laine will definitely cost around $9.5M even in a flat cap world. Winnepeg really needs to move one of their top 6 wingers for a top 4 defensive guy and 2C. That would provide better impact and what they need to really compete. I don't think the Jets are that far away from making a run.

As an example, bring home a championship caliber player like Keith with an A on his chest and add a 2nd line center like Strome, and this team would hands down be better. It's about the only place I see Keith waiving for simply to be closer to his family but unlikely the Hawks trade him or Strome for that matter despite twitter rumors.

Well then again, they could also be doing it for clicks. Laine had a very good year this year and he is young, being only 22 years of age. Trading him would be a move the Jets would regret. Also stings your forward core quite a bit with a possible 50-goal scorer leaving. I think Laine stays honestly. They had trade rumours all of last summer and nothing happened.

Jets are not far. All they need is a 2C and 2 Defensemen to compete.

Well I don't see the Jets moving major pieces of the core, for the reason that the Jets have 2 budding young D prospects who will be pro ready within the next 2 seasons (Samberg and Heinola) and with the cap space that opened up, you can give Laine an extension and put a temporary filler in on defense while also finding a 2C

I’d be using Vesalainen, Niku and Roslovic to acquire a 2C. Like, not sure what CHI would want for strome, but he’s a viable option, I just think they should try and pull the trigger on a Vesalainen + Roslovic + 2021 1st package to get a 2C with term. Maybe tampa takes that for Cirelli. Harkins copp and Lowry becomes your 3rd line, Appleton perreault and Gustafsson your 4th line and you’re set. I hate that Chevy is so patient cause we likely won’t see him make any sort of splash :/

I don't know, if I'm the Jets and because of Laine's contract who I would not trade unless a serious overpayment for him, I think the Jets should consider moving Ehlers or Connor for a top 4 D and legitimate 2C which isn't going to come cheap (not a back fill like Eakin). I think those two holes are bigger to fill then making 1 hole on wing. Wingers are the easiest position to fill in the league.

I would move Connor because of his term and value. Also because he can't defend for the life of him.

The problem with this is you're moving above average prospects (Vesalainen, Niku, Roslovic) who haven't shown they are going to reach their potential pre draft and expecting a legitimate young 2C to come back in Strome or Cerelli. Classic case of quantity over quality. For example the Hawks wouldn't move Strome even if all 3 of those pieces were included as they are all crap shoots and Strome at 23 years old has proven himself with good upside.

Yes I 100% see what you’re saying, it’s just tough cause we have no true valuable pieces that we’d move, unless it was a blockbuster move involving one of our wingers which is highly unlikely. The only reason I think it works for Tampa is because they need cap relief, roslovic has the chance to be a top 6 player and same with Vesalainen and they’re cheap. I’d also be interested in Gourde from Tampa for like a 4th rounder. He’s been surprisingly good

What about Dvorak from Arizona?

Has term, left handed which seems like what they want for a center for the 2nd line, reasonable contract for a 2C and it sounds like the Coyotes want to cut costs, wouldn't overpay for him but might be available for the right price, thoughts?

Jeez now that’s an interesting deal, I’ve seen a lot of talk about a Debrincat + Strome for Ehlers and Roslovic type deal. It’s super interesting to have a Keith for Little swap, imo little will be back next season but likely hits LTIR during the year due to reoccurring symptoms. So I’m not sure the 1st would be needed. Cause at that point you’re saying keith is worth a 1st, but maybe toss Vesalainen and a 3rd in over the 1st

Whatever you do, DO NOT move Ehlers. His skating is amazing and he was having a career year before COVID. Move Roslovic + Vesalainen + picks before moving Ehlers or Laine

Yup, totally agree, but if they trade Roslovic, Vesalainen and picks make it for someone that has a long term return, enough of the good assets traded for rentals/short term help.

Well, Vesalainen will probably fit as a top 6 winger, but your top 6 is already stacked. Makes more sense to deal him to try and get a 2C

Maybe Vesalianen and a 2nd? Idk, maybe there is something there. We'd leave a big hole in our left side if we lose Keith though but think that's also the kind of defensive player the Jets could use with a A slapped on his chest.
