The current fiscal environment should put Calgary in a position of strength, as long as they can spend to the cap. This year and next many trades should favour teams with cap space and real money to spend. If played strategically, the current situation could see Calgary make some solid upgrades without having to give away too much. That might extend their competitive window.
The Kings and Ducks will need some time before they seriously challenge for playoff spots again. The Sharks look like they are in decline, the Coyotes appear to be in big trouble, Vegas has serious cap issues, and its going to take at least another season before the Oilers will be able to bring reasonable balance to their roster. The Canucks appear to be the only team on a serious upswing in the Pacific, so the Flames still have time to get it right.
