Description
Tried to play it as safe as possible. Pretty much the same team as last year that made the playoffs.

Added a better back up in griess

Read today that the Oilers can take AA 85% of his QO of 3mil in arbitration. That could go either way of they do decide to qualify him.

Ennis comes back to play with his hometown childhood team. He could demand more money after last season though, almost 20 goals and 40 points.

JP finally comes back for a shade over a mil. Heard if he does agree to come back he and Holland have a hand shake agreement to trade him after this season. Heard that before.

Benning signs for more then Bear. Bear has no arbitration rights. Benning agrees to his QO so he can keep playing for the Oilers.

Russel gets traded for his negative value. I still don't think it will cost the Oilers that much to get rid of him but he would go to a team with a internal budget.

I think Oilers hold Larsson until the trade deadline st the very least. They need the D depth for another run at the playoffs. He is on a expiring contract and it's rumoured he won't sign in Edmonton again but I think that's always a possibility. Plus gives Bouchard time warm up work on a few more things before making the team and really holding a spot in the top 4. Really just need Larsson for depth.

Also Holland has said he would like to have 1-1.5 mil in cap space going into the trade deadline.

Why is that a problem? It’s constructive criticism.

I don't think so either. But everyone else does so based of that I put his value as so. Also Holland needs to move at least 1 vet D out to make room for Jones, Bouch and lag to get some playing time. If it's going to be anyone it should be Russel and if it costs a 3rd with only a 6th coming back I wouldn't cry over it. (Not like the Hall for Larsson trade, I still curl up in a ball over it). I still think this team will be more then good enough to make the playoffs.

I get why people call him a cap dump because he has AAV of 4million but his true salary is only 1.5m and I dont think any team should be begging for him but oilers should not have to pay much for a team like ottowa who has plenty of cap and can get help from an older vet guiding young players. I dont see why edmonton cant do what Pittsburgh just did with Minnesota.

Neither was Marleau but they still had to attach a 1st to get rid of his 6M cap hit for 1 year. Don't think it takes a 1st for Russel but it'd be at least a 2nd, which is kinda problematic when considering the Oilers' picks.

Alternatively, I'd trade Tierney+NYI 1st+DAL 2nd for Russell+14th overall. Drop back 14 spots in the 1st but pick up an long term 3C and add another pick to use or deal. While offloading Russell. Either way I don't see Russell waiving his NTC for Ottawa.

Also there's probably a better way for Edmonton to use that 14th overall.

I really enjoyed reading this. Share a lot of similar beliefs on direction of the team. I can understand why you posted that trade the way you did. Avoid value argument isn’t really worth getting into. Very few players actually carry negative value it’s just a misconception soooo many around here have. Great job in my opinion

he absolutely is a cap dump? 4 million for a 3rd pairing LHD .....maybe if their was a high demand for LHD OR if it wasn't a flat cap era. Capitals paid Grub to dump Orpik... Leafs paid 1st to dump PM... sometimes you get lucky like the Penguins and get a late pick but thats not always possible.

God I hate this debate. Toronto paid a first to have a team preform a buyout. That is completely different situation and has absolutely no comparable to this. If want to buyout russell that’s not on the oilers that’s a stupid choice another team decides to do. Trading a player who is among the best in the league at blocking shots and is versatile enough to be slot in just about anywhere on blueline. Under appreciated veteran who plays with a crap ton of heart.

Thank you. I see a lot of ideas on here some way more outrageous then others. I just wanted to put something out there that was safe, simple and still realistic. And I honestly believe that this team team would be perfect for next year and then it's a whole other ball game with all the prospects one more year ahead. We will see what nuge signs for. Yamo couldn go of this year. AA could replicate his season from two years ago, maybe even be better. JP could come back and play much better. And I genuinely think he will. I know it's just the SM-Liiga but man. He's miles ahead of everyone in preseason so far. An he was one of if not the best over there last year. Holland will have way more options and trade chips next season after a successful season and playoffs. Still to soon for a cup though.

100% agree. I’m super excited to see jp back. I never blamed him for leaving after watching the way he was treated his entire time in Edmonton. We should be very thankful there is even hope of his return I’m honestly unsure if I’d return if put in his position. Great job really really really like the realistic approach this team doesn’t need much it has the pieces mostly in place just might take another year

Exactly! Although, the Oilers did miss manage JPs playing time and anchors, I mean line mates I think he could of played this season in Edmonton and he would of ended up playing with McDavid. But he did regain a ton of confidence going back home. Fingers crossed he comes back and grinds his way back to the top and finds a home in the city of champions.

If you have time read this. It's a trade rumour but there's mention of JPs treatment.

I don’t think jp would have rebounded without the break away. As ugly as the situation has looked it’s going to be viewed as a huge blessing for everyone. I think we did the same harm to him as we did with Shultz just very fortunate in this case still have his rights.

Ya I heard mcdavid didn’t want jp on his line before. I don’t know how much to put into that tho. Heard that rumour only justifiable explanation is communication barrier which is worth correcting. I just find it hard to believe mcdavid gave his blessing to add manning to the team but is dead set against jp. Not sure how much stock should be put in it. Perhaps I’m wrong. Interesting article

Russel is definitely a cap dump.

Hes the perfect cap dump for Ottawa, so youre managing to dump him buy only moving back 3 rounds (not even actually costing you a pick)

Russell is in the same boat as Smith on NYR.
