Description
At his presser Benning mentioned the team will probably have to make some "tough decisions on young players". Also that they’re not interested in trading away more picks to shed salary cap.

Translation = Virtanen is trade bait, and Demko too if they can sign Markstrom and use the kids to shed a bad contract.

I don't think it's reasonable to say that Virtanen will be on the team next year. It seems more likely that he will be moved. It sucks that he couldn't figure it out and fully commit here.

I also don't think Gaudette showed a whole lot. I wouldn't be upset if he was moved in the right deal.

I’d do this from Detroit and I’m not a big Virtanen fan. Worst case we flip him for a second/third round pick which was the original offer. Best case, he gets his crap together and gets going.

I think they’re in a similar boat; showed pretty good development in the regular season but neither were a big factor in the playoffs. The BIG difference though is that the prospect pipeline at center is pretty bare, making it more likely the team sticks with Gaudette I think. They could deal him for a pick and try to sign a UFA 3C, but there’s not a lot of options there.

You're going to get a lot of negative comments for this one. I'm a big fan of the idea of massaging a deal where Detroit takes the Eriksson contract for Demko. Virtanen is a nice start to try to balance it, but you would have some ways to go yet. Remember, Marleau went with a first and a seventh for a sixth. His contract was $6.25M for one more season. Add another season and the cap hell reality COVID has ushered in, and you will need more. If that's the measuring stick, then Eriksson is worth two firsts and two sevenths minus two sixths. One sixth is in the trade to begin with. One could point at Martin Jones as a comparative for Demko. He went for a first and Kuraly as a promising young goalie. So, that takes out a first. Kuraly was a promising center prospect in college and was a fifth round pick. Trading up two sevenths for a single a sixth and taking a little value out of the remaining first. Virtanen may eat up the rest of the value. Let other fans who are better at this than me argue that. But that leaves Pickard and Biega as overpayment.

So, based on the reasoning above, I would remove Biega and Pickard and maybe throw in a fifth to Detroit. Now, everyone commence in telling me how stupid I am. haha

A deal that centers around DET taking Loui, and getting Demko or more for their troubles, I'm in.

The other details (what picks) would be add ons would just be minor details to me. But DET would not be trading down in anyway.

I'd probably do that for Detroit. Eriksson+Demko+2nd was agreed upon before Demko mania and Virtanen is worth a 2nd/3rd imo.

Just depends on how Yzerman values Demko and Virtanen I guess. And Biega and Pickard were just throw-ins to help even out the overall contracts, I don’t see them have much value at all. If it means taking the DET 6th out I’m sure VAN would still go for it.
