I really like the idea of Jost for Puljujarvi. Nice!!

So Jost. Avs 16-17 season everything that could go wrong went wrong. Injuries, bad luck, coaching change 2 weeks before the season all resulted in a debacle of 48 OT season. Expectations weren’t particularly high for the 17-18 season for the Avs and Jost having signed his elc in the spring was expected to develop and be given every chance in the top 6 that season. Then Duchene is traded, MacK becomes MacK and they are fighting for a playoff spot. Jost should have been sent to the AHL but because of lack of talent particularly in the bottom 6 he stayed with Avs bouncing around with different line mates showing promise but because they were in a playoff chase he wasn’t given prime minutes, was mostly relegated to the bottom 6 and some 2nd PP minutes. 18-19 was suppose to be different but he was short leashed, got sent to the AHL for a couple of weeks where it was obvious he was to good to play. But at the end of the season and into the playoff he seemed to establish himself actually as part of the 2nd line w/Colin Wilson and finding his stride. 19-20 Avs get Kadri Burakovsky and Donskoi effectively forcing him back to the bottom 6. He shows flashes during the season including a hat trick against TBL. But never has continuity in a role and linemates he even is killing penalties. Ultimately that brings us to where he is now. Value, honestly a 2nd rd pick and another later pick because he has some obvious skills. Imo if he is given a regular spot with regular linemates on the 2nd line he is a 40-45 pt player who can contribute on special teams. In your trade I think the Avs do that.

Thanks for the clarity! Not the first time we've seen this with prospects lol. Not sure if Newhook/Bowers will play C in the NHL but if so it seems like Jost is more than expendable.

Really well put. Jost is frustrating because he does a lot of the little things right. He works hard, he’s good on the forecheck, he digs pucks well and does a good job cycling in the offensive zone. And he has plenty of tools - skating, very good hands, good shot, pretty good hockey IQ. His defensive game has also improved steadily, and he’s added penalty killing to his repertoire. The skill definitely flashes. But he hasn’t been able to put it together offensively. Just like you said, I think opportunity has played a big role. I also think it was a mistake to bounce him around between center and wing. But I think part of it is on Jost too. For all the tools he has, he doesn’t get himself into positions on the ice to produce offensively. The weakest part of his game, in my opinion, is his ability to be effectively offensively without the puck.
Personally, I think it’s time to move on. Get value back for him while you can, and if he turns into a legit top six player elsewhere then the Avs shrug their shoulders and know they at least got something back.

I’m not against jost would be interested in adding to oilers but jp isn’t a name you bring to the table for a 3c. He’s going to play a much more significant role next year.

Newhook is 100% a center, BC played it cute at the start of last year and had him on the wing. When they switched him back to C he exploded. His expected development dovetails in with Kadri’s contract and he is the future 2C. Bowers has been playing both in the AHL. His speed and defensive acumen have bottom 6 C written on him. Personally I think Jost just needs a change of scenery.
